If you are a vegan quinoa is a good source of protein in your diet. . It is also gluten free if you have allergies.

Barley is a great source of fiber so it will fill you up. It also is a relatively low glycemic food which normalizes your blood sugar and satiates hunger over a longer period of time. I use it in soup all the time. Quinoa is called a complete protein because it is high in protein, amono acids, iron, magnesium and vitamins. It is an acquired taste but can be greatly enhanced for breakfast with cinnamon and apples and a bit of stevia and as a side dish with olive oil, sauteed garlic and herbs. As or couscous, it is really pasta, which is a refined wheat product. Try mixing cooked couscous with cooked quinoa. Saute garlic in olive oil. Add a small can or jar of plain (not marinated) artichoke hearts to the garlic and oil. Heat through. Add roasted slivered almonds and top with a bit of feta and fresh herbs such as basil and parsley or even dill if you are serving this as a side dish for fish such as salmon. My family likes this recipe I put together since some don’t like quinoa by itself.

Hi Cleanplate, You weren’t specific if you have any allergies so “we can eat” is not clearly defined. Quinoa is not technically a cereal nor grain nor grass like barley. It is a seed or chenopod related to beetroot or spinach. Couscous is a pasta in tiny pieces. If your issue is gluten then rice is gluten free.

I’m a little unclear about what you are trying to avoid. If removing gluten is your goal then both barley and couscous should be minimized in your diet. There is a blog “The Chalkboard” which has great healthy eating information. Hope this helps.

Do you like barley? then by all means add it to your diet. I personally like quinoa better, plus I think it’s easier to cook.
