Would like to look thinner while starting a diet. Carry my weight in my middle/midriff. Should I look for loose tops with empirish look or straight tops, one color or another?

    Hello Tanstett:

Congratulations on your decision to start a diet! Best of luck!

If you carry your weight in your mid section, you should consider straight top or tops cut on the bias which “skim” your figure.

Women who carry weight in their middle are wise to consider tops with a flattering, open neckline….bateau neck, v neck are two flattering popular options.

Single colored tops are more versatile…especially when dieting. Popular brands which are flattering with slim bottoms include Lafayette 148, Elie Tahari and Akris Punto. These brands have tops which run up to size xl. Vince is a contemporary brand which stops at size 12 (their large), but they cut oversized which if you are a missy 12-14-16, many of their pieces “skim.”

Color and interest are best achieved through face framing accessories….elongated earrings, an interesting textured necklace. Proportion is also key.

If you are over 5 ft 5″, you can probably wear an interesting necklace that hangs to just below your waist. If you are more petite, an 18-20″ necklace.

All that said, one secret which is often overlooked…a well fitting bra! Women’s bra sizes fluctuate with their weight…with as little as 5 pounds. I would recommend getting fitted at a specialty foundation store, or ask for a certified fit specialist in Nordstrom. It is amazing how a good bra slims your profile.

I am a big fan of structured, no seam, underwire minimizer bras in nude which have double layers of material that does not stretch. Wacoal, Chanterelle are two of my favorites.

Hope that these suggestions are helpful and hopeful!

Good morning! First of all, get tops that fit yet skim the body! Skip tops that are “too tight, too loose, too short or too long!” They’ve never been known to do anything for anyone! Secondly, look for a neck line that provides a point of interest! A v-neck or a bateau-neck; for example, moves the eye upward (as does a good haircut, radiant makeup and a well chosen pair of earrings, necklace or scarf)! Thirdly, do wear flattering colors and prints [too] if you would like! Nice colors will give you ‘a glow,’ thereby keeping the eyes on the face! Your skirt or slacks do not have to be matchy-matchy, but be aware that if they are in the same or a complimentary family of color it only adds to ‘that sleekness factor!’ Let your height dictate the size of the print! If petite, go small; If average, go medium; If tall, go large! Cute tops can be found at any number of stores, and now is a good time to look for some: Old Navy or Gap, Banana Republic or Talbots, J.C. Penney or K-Mart, kohls or Ross, Walmart too! Your favorite store or outlet is sure to have several selections! Congratulations on your decision to look, and to feel good! Have a grrrrreat, grrrrreat weekend! Shalom!

many of us girls feel this pain….myself included. there are so many beautiful “easy tops”.. if I may throw out names..check out Eileen Fisher for easy stylish tops and great skinny pants…Its a winning combination for our body top. they have shaped tops too which work really well. Forget empire waist they emphasize a negative. hope this was helpful

IMO you want to create a waist. You can do that by wearing a jacket that nips in at the waist or a belt (wide chuncky ones are very forgiving and concealing) or a V necked caridigan that you just button at the waist. If you have nice legs another great look is a skimming sweater dress that hits slightly above the knee with some higher pumps. The sweater dress skims past all your curves and emphasizes your legs. I think a problem a lot of people make is trying to cover “it all”, and it just ends up looking dumpy. Also, find someone in the media who has a shape similar to yours and do what they do. HEre’s is a pinterest board full of outfits modeled by Women over 45. Many of them have the same issues as you, yet they maximize what they have: http://pinterest.com/stillblondeaaty/outfits-modeled-by-women-over-45/

This is an easy question for me, as I am always dieting…. I like straight classic pieces… Big tops are how we got there in the first place. This year is a great one for diet tops!!!!All those great straighr mens looking shirts.. My favorites are from Equipment. Buy n neutral colors and maybe one leopard print for fun.. Also sooo many great cardigans you canwear with a cami or just buttoned right up worn as a top. Big tops make one look big… When I wear a big top sometimes i think that i am thiner than i am and then can eat. NO NO NO go with a sllmmer look .. you will be focused and look great. Zara also has good styles at great prices!!!! Good luck!!!!!
