Hi, I had a hysterectomy, almost 7 years ago and I still have hot flashes. I don’t want to take hormones as my Mom had breast cancer and died from it. I use Estroven now, did use Bio-identical hormones for about 3 years but cannot afford them. Help

In well conducted scientific trials, most commonly available over the counter products have not been shown to be superior to placebo in reducing hot flashes,so it is not surprising the Estroven is not helpful. Bear in mind that bioidentical compounded estrogen has NEVER been proven to be any safer than transdermal estrogen products such as vivelle or divigel and furthermore it is not clear that taking estrogen, even given your moms history would necessarily increase your own risk for breast cancer. That having been said, drugs that have traditionally been used to treat depression such as Effexor ,Paxil , lexapro have all been shown to be superior to placebo in reducing hot flashes as has gabapentin a drug traditionally used to treat seizure disorder.

You may wish to consult with a certified menopause practitioner in your area:

There are a number of non-hormone options available today.

Hope you find a regime that works for you.

    Hi Yayao,
Yes, there is something that will help. Its called “Womens Essence.” It is made from plant extracts and is excellent. This will help balance hormones in the body as well as help with dryness. If you feel you dont need this – go online and order Mulla Mulla. This is also a plant extract made just to remove heat from the body. You can take easily – a couple of drops in water or put in a bath. This will get rid of hot flashes as well as fever, great for sunburn pain. Its excellent. I used to take bio identicals as well and stopped. Believe it or not – I use and customize plant extracts (Practitioner for Emotional health) for anxiety, depression, motivation, etc and see results within one month. So this will truly work fantastic for you, and another plus – its inexpensive! The products are by Australian Bush Flower Essences and if you cannot get it – I can lead you in the right direction.

I’m not a doctor, but I switched from the bio-identical progesterone that my doctor prescribed to an over the counter one. I checked with him, and he told me that it was the EXACT same strength that he had been prescribing for me. I think it’s made by a company called Progesta-Care.
