While osteoarthritis can impact people of all ages and builds, studies have shown that weight and joint pain are closely connected. Small gains can make a big difference on our weight-bearing joints like knees and hips. Knee and hip pain can become so debilitating for some that even simple tasks can be challenging, like walking down the stairs or getting out of a car.

As a psychologist, professor and a relationship expert, I’m thrilled to discuss the impact of menopause on our daily lives and to share my relief recipe for women who are needlessly suffering from menopause symptoms.
Hot flashes, sleep disturbances, low sex drive, mood swings – welcome to menopause.
Now that boomers are reaching their middle years, it’s a fast-growing club – and one that I’m actually quite pleased to join. So should you.
The best kept secret about menopause is that, if symptoms are managed well, it can be one of the most powerful stages in a woman’s life. But if this exciting time is marred by uncomfortable hot flashes, low libido, disrupted sleep, and mood swings, it’s hard to imagine that any woman can be at peak performance.
Change your menopause for the better, safely and effectively.
If you are in menopause and suffering from the discomforts of menopause, I want to introduce you to a product that is safe** and effective. Besides being praised by many women, it works naturally and is tested in numerous clinical studies.
That product is Amberen.
Amberen Multi-Symptom Relief is an all-in-one solution for every woman’s menopause.
Amberen is a dietary supplement created to manage not just a few but multiple menopause symptoms*. Its proprietary formula relieves up to 12 common symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, sleeplessness, mood swings, sex drive, joint aches, low energy, headaches, difficulty concentrating and stress*. Part of a daily regimen, it can be taken throughout all stages from perimenopause to postmenopause.

As we enter our 40s, 50s and beyond, we hear a lot of chatter about hormone replacement therapy a.k.a. H-R-T. “Hormone replacement therapy is a hot topic (literally) in our community, and we’re constantly learning about all of the benefits,” says Geri Brin, Founder of FabOverFifty.
With so many sources of information, we’ve created a QUIZ to help dispel some common myths while giving you the real facts about menopause symptoms and HRT. HRT is medication containing female hormones to replace the ones your body no longer makes after menopause, are used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats. Test YOUR knowledge by taking the quiz below. (more…)

I haven’t the foggiest idea how my mom kept track of the numerous meds she had to take when she was in her 80s. She lined the little bottles up like soldiers on the dining table, which she never actually used for dining, but as a holding place for necessities like her meds, bills, keys and eyeglasses. It was one thing to remember to take each medication. What about remembering how often to take it and at what time of day? She could have used an Excel spreadsheet, if she had a computer.
I’m reminded of my mother now that I take three medications a day, plus I change my transdermal Estradiol patch every 3.5 days. I take the three meds first thing each morning, seven days a week, but sometimes I forget to change the patch. That’s why I started to write notes on my calendar to remind me when I should apply a new one.
The renowned Mayo Clinic recently reported that over 50 percent of Americans take two prescription medications, and 20 percent at least five, so this increases the likelihood of taking the wrong dose, or even forgetting to take a medication at all. I’m a perfect example when it comes to changing my Estradiol patch! To address this growing issue, and remove the anxiety out of remembering when to take multiple meds, CVS Pharmacy has come up with an ingenious prescription management system, called ScriptPath.
A PRESCRIPTION FOR PEACE OF MIND (AND GOOD HEALTH!)
ScriptPath Prescription Schedule, the centerpiece of the system, provides a personalized, prominent, complete and clear picture of a patient’s up-to-date CVS Pharmacy prescription information all on one document, including the name of the medications; the most effective times to take each of them (morning, midday, evening and bedtime); how much to take in each dose, as well simple refill instructions and personalized notes. Colorful and easy-to-understand icons are designed to strengthen patients’ safety by simplifying how they take medications and how caregivers administer them. (more…)
Dry skin is common in later life.
We naturally lose oil glands as we age, and the overheated indoor air we rely on to keep our homes comfortable during the winter makes the problem worse! Think about a favorite pair of leather shoes that’s stretched out and cracked after years of wear. Like leather, your skin has countless pores that absorb or release moisture. When it releases too much of its moisture, it will dry up. If it dries up too much, cracks may form, especially on your elbows and feet. What’s more, your skin loses its wonderful foundation of collagen and elastin, making it loose and saggy.
The increasingly crippling itch in Bel Kambach’s feet was starting to affect her sleep by 2012. “I was so fatigued, I could hardly make it out of bed in the morning,” remembers the 50-year-old professor of ecotourism and the environment. But Bel soldiered on, also chalking up her exhaustion to the fact she’d been working so hard, for years, to earn a tenured teaching position at St. Cloud State College in Minnesota.
Tenure was in sight, and Bel looked forward to living a more peaceful life as a single working mother with a 10-year-old daughter.
Bel had been diagnosed a few years earlier with autoimmune hepatitis, liver inflammation that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your liver cells. Unfortunately, the drugs prescribed for Bel weren’t working, so she decided to get checked out at the renowned Mayo Clinic. Although she never could afford treatment there on her salary, she was accepted as an insured patient as a resident of Minnesota.
The Mayo doctors gave Bel the devastating news that she had been misdiagnosed three years earlier and actually had Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC), a rare and progressive autoimmune disease that mainly affects women and slowly destroys the bile ducts of the liver. Bile, an enzyme produced in the liver, helps digest food and rid your body of worn-out red blood cells, cholesterol and toxins. When these ducts are damaged, harmful substances can build up in the liver, which can lead to irreversible scarring of liver tissue, called cirrhosis. Severe liver scarring can necessitate a liver transplant. (more…)
