{Style Expert} What do you think of this look?

This FOF is clearly a skilled shopper–her Missoni for Target flats sold out in minutes (how on earth did she snag her pair?); her Gucci tote universally coveted; and her leopard print scarf was très à la mode this winter. But did she try to pile on too many closet highlights in one outfit? Read what our style experts think, and then tell us: What do you think of her look?

.

Sherrie Mathieson: “This outfit lacks cohesion! My eyes dart everywhere. The shoes only relate to the jeans, the scarf only relates to the jacket and the bag only relates to the jacket and jeggings. There’s no tie-in palette. This outfit strives to be spirited and happy, but without the skill set to put eclectic patterns and color together, it ends up just child-like.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

Lovey Dash: “She’s in great shape and looks adorable in her Missoni for Target ballet flats and leggings. Her chic orange jacket is great, and I love the leopard scarf. Leopard is a neutral in my book–it’s my favorite color. Her classic Gucci bag is fine, although not my favorite. Still, thumbs up for me!”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

Glenyse Thompson: “Too much going on! I can appreciate all of these elements, but not all together. If the Fashion Police were to catch her they could lock her up for ‘eccentric overuse of texture, prints and color.’ Her leggings and long tee would have been complimented nicely with a trench coat, and solid-colored scarf in any one of the colors from her flats.”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

.

Susan Hersh: “There are too many patterns in this one look. The orange piped jacket can work if this woman replaces the animal print scarf with a small pattern that blends rather than being the focal point. The Gucci handbag is too summery for this transitional outfit and should be replaced with black.”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

.

Terry Gibralter: “In my book her entire outfit is a big don’t! Nothing is working together. I like the look she’s going for–layers over leggings, with accents–but the animal print scarf over the too-big, Austrian style jacket, paired with the geometric bag and unfitted tee just look sloppy. She has nice legs which look good in leggings, but she needs to get the rest of the outfit together. I do like the cute Missoni flats.”

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

Just because it fits doesn’t mean it works. Ok, so everyone is goo-goo for Target’s Missoni shoes – to me they just look like a cute print on some really cheap shoes. They look like the are about to fall apart. Are those HUE capri leggins in denim? Again, too cheap – she would be better in a real jegging to the foot. The scarf and bag say: Purchased from a street vendor. I don’t know of many people for whom that orange really works. The outfit could work with jeggings, keep the tunic, different colored, better fitting jacket, more substance to the shoes, artsy tote, more lux to the scarf and no white near the face.

My grandmother would have called this outfit “too busy”. She obviously has some lovely pieces. I am all for mixing 2 different patterns in an outfit, but IMHO, too much is going on at once. She has great taste in clothing pieces, and nice legs, I’d just like to see her in a longer boyfriend style cardigan. I do love the color of her jacket, & would keep the color. I’d change the cardigan style as I said above, go with a nice black bag, keep the scarf; THEN go for flats in the same pattern, but lose the pinks and purples in the flats for reds and oranges, & hope the navy in them was replaced with black. I sure wish I had her shapely calves! 🙂

Ooops! On my above comment, I thought the leggings were black, which is what I would go with if following my above suggestions. I am either color blind or need to adjust my color settings on my monitor. 😉

Bag, and scarf and shoes… too many conflicting patterns. Mixing patterns is fine but there should be an element or two that ties them together. Not so, here. They’re just a bunch of non-related items. I also think that skinny jeans would have given more balance to the lower half of her body. The jeggings make her look too top heavy. But, all of those pieces separately are great. She could get many outfit combinations by just using one, or possibly two, of them at a time.

Everything she’s wearing is nice, but don’t “work” when wearing them together. Shirt hanging below jacket doesn’t go with design of jacket. Scarf isn’t the one to use with jacket.Purse isn’t is a pleasing look with other patterned parts of outfit.

It’s all just a bit too much. The bag, jacket and shoes just have to go. The rest would be more of a classic look paired with a solid flats.

This would be liveable with a black boyfreind jacket, plain black or matching leopard flats and a black or leopard bag. Polish is the look to shoot for: not traffic cone. Save the orange fleece for the ski slopes so they can find you when you go down….

I feel like this look is way too busy. The bright jacket, animal print scarf, over-size handbag, t-shirt below the jacket hem and finishing off with the very busy Missoni ballet flats…what shall I look at first?!
What is so conspicuous because of their absence are a bit of make-up and earrings.

  16. Larc says:

No, no, no!! Nothing seems to go together. The jacket looks too big and like it’s made out of fleece. The scarf and the flats don’t belong on the same person at the same time. The long shirt makes her legs look squatty.

Tan or brown shoes or boots would add a nice detail to this outfit. The jacket would be fine with a skirt or more dressy pants for it looks too sophisticated for the grey tshirt top and denim jeggings. The Missoni shoes make a statement all by themselves and can be with a color block dress or something plain to show them off to better effect.

I like the color of the jacket but it is shapeless and looks too big. The ankle length leggings/pants, ugh. Maybe if she had a different coat on it would work but now it’s just a big mess.

the leggings are horrible; so is the bag. I love the jacket and the shoes, but no, not together and def not with the scarf. A lot of people agree it is too BUSY; but great as individual pieces.
And her hair is drab; she would do with a short bob.

Honestly, women are our own worst critics. I’d like to have her shapely legs for sure. I agree that the purse is too summery and the orange jacket a little bright and oversize. Overall, if I saw her on the street I’d admire her legs and adventurous spirit.

I don’t know. I think that the shoes, leggings, shirt and scarf are all good together. Nothing can match now. I read this month’s Lucky mag.!! The orange coat was one I wanted in high school, but it’s a good pop of color for a more sedate outfit. I agree that leopard print is the new neutral now too!! It’s just the bag that I might change. But sometimes I’m just too darn lazy to change all the junk in my purse for a better matching one, so I am cutting her a break on that.

The tangerine jacket is the must have color for 2012. Would like to see a better fit on the jacket. Love the leopard scarf too. The package lacks elements of cohesiveness.
(BRUMPS)Balance, rhythm, unity, mass, proportion = principles of art & design. With so many factors influencing the “look” multiple patterns create a negative effect.
Each piece has merit, just not together.
A stylish/good hair cut can also help to pull it off.

The jacket color is not flattering to her, her skin and hair are completely washed away by her outfit. Also, the jacket is too big. She is in great shape, she would look terrific in fitted coat with a belt in a a more complementary color with some boots. The shoes are cute but not with the winter coat and scarf.

What a fantastic jacket and the color is dynamite! It goes with the jeans but that’s where the entire outfit should have stopped. A neutral shoe, a navy sweater and she would have been good to go. One more important lesson where less would have been more!

Where do you start with this? The orange jacket is awful. It is too big and the cut doesn’t flatter her at all. The purse and scarf (which I do like) clash and not in a good way. The shoes, although cute, don’t go with anything but the leggings and they don’t look as if they fit.

Considering the lack of style of her hair and apparent lack of makeup, perhaps she just grabbed whatever was close at hand to run to the market. Hopefully these weren’t conscience choices she made.

I do agree with others that the top half of her is in winter mode and the bottom, summer. Makes me cold just looking at her bare ankles. But what great legs she has!

Way too much. Jacket looks a tad too large in shoulders and unfitted, the leggings seem too short and just don’t fit with the top of her look. Shoes don’t go with it either and do not like them, anyway. Just looks all out of sorts, top baggy, bottom short and tight. Looks like she just got out of bed. Disturbs me because if she did not do so much at once and would tone it down she could look better since she is nice and slim. Looks sloppy-and cheap.

Great jacket. Too bad it doesn’t fit. It is actually concave over the chest ! If you are going to wear the leopard scarf & those flamestitch Missoni shoes, I would opt for shoes in the same coloring as the scarf. I would also lose that handbag.
That said the orange is a brilliant color on her.

Too much going on – way too much. The jacket does’t fit so I would ditch that immediately and put on a neutral color longer jacket or coat. Depending on how that looked I might have to ditch the scarf as well and replacec it with a tiny print with wome of the colors from the shoes. The flats are awesome. They would stay with the jeggings no mater what.

Each element is good, but the scarf, jacket and bag make too much bulk. Plus the look isn’t complemented by trendy hair and some makeup. If you’re going to step out fashion-wise, your face and hair have to come along for the ride.

I think that there are a couple of problems here: Too much going on! My eye doesn’t know where to look first. Go with a kitten heel in nude or navy to show off those great gams! And second, the jacket is a perfect color, just WAY too large for you. Go with something more fitted. Otherwise, I think the outfit can work as long as your butt is covered since you’re wearing leggings. If you decide to go with a cropped jacket, get some (great fitting ;-0 ) trouser jeans or if you want the ballet flats, cropped ankle jeans.
