If you haven’t seen her on HSN, chances are you’ve seen her insanely-popular Debbie Meyer™ CakeCutters™, GreenBoxes™, or GreenBags® online or in stores. FOF entrepreneur, Debbie Meyer, used her innate knack of solving everyday problems in the kitchen to create a thriving business.
Leaving behind years of experience in the corporate world, Debbie decided to stay home when she had her son, 23 years ago. Immediately, everyday household inefficiencies started to bug her. Cutting a birthday cake was always a mess, and Debbie was sick of it. After buying a piece of metal and bending it herself, she created the perfect solution to keep fingers off the frosting and slice a clean piece of cake at the same time. When her friends began to ask for her cake cutters, she knew she was onto something. Holding a degree in business administration and marketing, Debbie wasn’t going to let this opportunity pass her by–she was going to sell her invention! First, she created working prototypes to show in a booth at the International Home and Housewares Show, where buyers from stores around the world come to see the newest products on the market. “The QVC buyer saw it and immediately wanted it,” Debbie says. After numerous meetings, CakeCutters™ went into production and launched on TV in 1999.
With ideas constantly popping into her head (“they come from my own life,” Debbie says), her leap into entrepreneurship has been incredibly successful.
Having a good idea, though, isn’t enough to get to where she is, Debbie cautions. “If anyone tells you that it’s fast, cheap, or easy– they’re lying to you. You have to get off the couch. If you have a great idea or you’re yearning to do something– go out and do it.”
Debbie constantly revamps her products to keep them routinely selling out on HSN, online and in many stores, including Bed Bath & Beyond. Her most recent milestone? Selling one billion Debbie Meyer™ GreenBags®. “I never understood why I couldn’t keep produce fresh for my family, even though it could be shipped from around the world to my local grocery store,” she said. So she did some research and decided to have the industrial application adapted for consumer use.
Debbie loves being an entrepreneur because “it’s very gratifying when you know you’ve done something from your own heart, yet so many people gravitate to it.” Since her first product was introduced, she’s helped millions of people worldwide with her collection of cost-effective and efficient products. She doesn’t intend to slow down anytime soon.
“I just turned 62. I’m just getting started.”
