{Giveaway} Luxe Leather Handbag from Barr + Barr

FOF fashion designer, Helen Barr, is giving away a luxe, calfskin hobo. To enter, answer this question in the comments below: Do you match your bags to your shoes?

Thank you for entering. This contest is now closed.

FOF Helen Barr had “former lives” as an artist, fashion exec and magazine editor. Then, in the late 90s, she decided she wanted to get into the booming business of bags. “I took a deep breath, rented an office, and began designing and manufacturing private label bags for Spiegel and Bloomingdales until I had a bit of money in the business,” says Helen. After three years designing private label, Helen launched Barr + Barr in 2000. Her bags were an instant hit, with her first designs selling to Neiman Marcus and Saks. “I grew it bag by bag,” she says.

Now, just a decade since it launched, Barr + Barr has received accolades from InStyle, Town & Country and Harper’s Bazaar editors and has been picked up by the Home Shopping Network (where the bags have been known to sell out in minutes). They’ve been toted around Tinseltown by Kim Cattrall, Sharon Stone and Debra Messing, and have made appearances on prime time shows including Sex and the City and Will and Grace. One of Helen’s bags was even worn by first lady, Laura Bush. “I keep the letter from her hanging on my showroom wall,” says Helen.

No, I do not necessarily match bag and shoes unless it’s a special event. For work or casual I use the same bag no matter what shoes I’m wearing. ~ LOVE this bag, it’s a great color and the style/shape is wonderful!

When I was young, I absolutely had to match purse and shoes until one day I had my clutch purse stolen because I had set it down to look at some merchandise. Then I started carrying a backpack purse and didn’t care if it didn’t match anything I wore. Now, I change purses once in awhile but I am very, very careful. I love purses and have a large collection to look at but rarely use.

I try to match as closely as possible. As long as I get in the neighborhood. I do however do that splash of color thing. The shoes and bag are matching no matter what color I have on. The older I get, the more I feel secure in the fact that I look good, no matter what and I won’t necessarily scare anyone away when I walk down the street.

When I’m purchasing a bag, I try to buy one that will go with my winter and summer wardrobe. So the answer would have to be no, I don’t match my bag to my shoes. I know a good rule of thumb was alway buy a black bag for the winter because most people wear dark shoes in the winter. That old rule seems so stifling because it keeps one from going for a peacock blue bag for the winter which would knock the socks off of people. Or in the summer instead of buying a basic neutral bag, why not try a sparkling gold bag that would show total glamour all the way around no matter what color shoes one wore.

I really try not to match. Matchy matchy is not my thing. I’m beginning to think that one of the two, bag or shoes, should be an eye-popping color or pattern, and not necessarily matching your outfit. (I think fashion magazines are getting to me!! Oh no!!) This bag, though, is gorgeous!!! I’d wear it with anything, just to wear it.

Matching bags to shoes exactly is very contrived. I find it is much more interesting to mix textures. For ex: if you have a Peau de Soie shoe of course you can go w/ the obvious & pick the same for your evening bag. I would try a beaded bag or fabric mixed w/ a beautiful ornament making a fashion statement. I will wear a black studded bag w/ suede boots & jeans for a “tough” chic look. Mixing it up creates interest & always makes an individual statement.

Not any more! There are a lot of those antiquated fashion dos/don’ts that fortunately I have moved away from, including no longer feeling the need to match my purse with my shoes…just like don’t wear white after Labor Day! Sometimes my purse is what adds that extra oomph, or pop of color needed! And, a white leather purse….I’d use it every day, and quite probably in any season! 🙂

Well,no, I don’t always but I do try to stay in the same color “family”. If I’m wearing gray with black, I don’t mind wearing black shoes and a deep gray bag.
I love it when someone wears a bag as the focal point of their outfit; to me that’s someone who’s very put together.
