Inheriting the “daredevil” gene

wallenda-intro

That son of a FOFlying Wallenda.

If you’ve been living under a rock, you may not know that daredevil Nik Wallenda, 34, walked across the Grand Canyon last weekend on a 2-inch wide beam. We’re not kidding– he walked 1400 feet across Little Colorado River Gorge with only a bar to balance himself. His family, including his wife and kids, watched on. His mother, FOF Delilah Wallenda, must be very proud. Don’t worry, she’s a high wire artist too.

If your son walked across the Grand Canyon, would you be proud?

    I’d have him committed.

I’ve actually walked on a two-inch diameter cable! Went five or six feet wibbling and wobbling back and forth and side to side. Of course, I was only two feet off the ground! My son is far better balanced than I but I still don’t know if I could stand the thought of him attempting such a feat. Of course, had he grown up since infancy treading across a wire, I might be a bit more calm about it. Oh, wait! No I wouldn’t! I’d be a nervous wreck. And, once he stepped off that cable on the far side of the canyon, I would be SO proud!
What an accomplishment, Nik. And what a way to stay in touch with your mortality.

I had to spend most of that time watching my family watch him…. I was a wreck once he expressed his own wavering calm. I wanted to have it on, though, BECAUSE I had heard that he prayed all the way across the Niagra Falls last year and I wanted my children to experience hearing it. We saw him in Atlantic City last summer: frightening but not nearly the extent that this walk was. BTW, it’s a little inadvertently misleading to call it a beam. It was a wire, albeit 2 inches thick. But not fixed as a beam would be. gulp.

Good point about the beam, Nancy.

Yes! Well, my sons play football and that’s death-defying enough for me, but I watched this, breathlessly. And I loved every second of it! I love that he is a believer and praised Jesus through every step! God bless the Wallendas!

Yes I would be so proud. I watched the whole show and was on the edge of my seat all the time, praying right along with Nik. God Bless the Wallendas.
