Some nail colors–candy-apple red, sheer pink–are forever. But with polish as cheap as $3 a bottle, you don’t always have to invest in the classics. We checked in with FOF Deborah Lippmann, manicurist to the stars (i.e. Meryl Streep), who reveals this year’s top nail trends so far. You tell us, would you wear them?
To enter to win a bottle of FOF Deborah Lippmann’s own fave shade, Naked, vote and then answer this questions in the comments below: What’s your go-to nail polish shade, no matter what’s trendy?
—————————————————————————————————
Before you run screaming from this color, consider it paired this spring with a classic white blouse, jeans and a pair of neutral flats. Or, as Deborah says, “it will give you that easy, breezy and carefree feeling you’d have on vacation.” Still not convinced? Vote “No way!”
Deborah Lippmann “Mermaid’s Dream,” available Spring 2012; Essie “Absolutely Shore,” $8; Revlon Nail Enamel “Minted,” $4.79; Butter London “Bossy Boots,” $14.
—————————————————————————————————
“Turquoise will be a big color this spring and summer,” says Deborah. “Different hues of blue–baby blue, turquoise, and navy–will definitely be a lasting trend seen into fall as well.” We could imagine working the baby blue at the beach, and we love the idea of navy for fall. Turquoise sounds a bit trickier–but we take Deborah’s word for it. Do you?
Essie “Bobbing for Baubles,” $9; Deborah Lippmann “On The Beach,” available spring 2012; Priti NYC “Crown of Thorns,” $12.50; Butter London “Blagger,” $14.
—————————————————————————————————
“My new ‘Run The World Girls’ neon shades [editor’s note: these will be available in Spring 2012] have a matte finish, which makes it easier for us FOFs to wear the trend,” says Deborah. “If you don’t feel like you can take the plunge with CONFIDENCE–because that’s the key–then wear it on your toes!” Yes, the highlighter shade takes a little getting used to, but we love tan hands with neatly trimmed nails in neon pink.
Essie “Knockout Pout,” $3.90; Essie “Tangerine,” $6.65; Chanel “Mimosa,” $34.99; Butter London “Jaffa,” $14.
“Beige is the new sheer pink, and its popularity is rising,” says Deborah. “It gives the illusion of skin continuing and really lengthens your finger. My staple nude is ‘Naked.’” The trick is to match your skin–whether it’s beige, tan, chocolate or porcelain. We don’t need convincing on this one. It truly lengthens–try it!
Deborah Lippmann “Naked,” $16; OPI “Samoan Sand,” $8; Dior Vernis “Ivory,” $30.59; RGB “F3,” $16.
- —————————————————————————————————
Still hanging on from fall, deep grey and dark-cherry red are a great choice to get you through the winter. “I am into ‘Stormy Weather’ and ‘Single Ladies,’” says Deborah.
Deborah Lippmann “Stormy Weather,” $16; Deborah Lippmann “Single Ladies,” $16; Essie “Smokin’ Hot,” $8; Essie “Clutch Me If You Can,” $8.

When I was younger I had beautiful hands and could wear any color I wanted to. Now as I have “matured”, I have accepted the fact that my hands have “matured” also. I will enjoy seeing those beautiful bright colors on the beautiful hands that should be wearing them! Helen Grant 🙂

I use a pale pink/beige nail color in a flat tone, sometimes shimmering. It makes my nails look as if I’ve got french manicure and is very neat looking. I like that if it chips or wears at the tips, it doesn’t show, so less upkeep than a dark shade that has to have damage-control immediately.

Wendy May says:
Essie-clutch me if you can and OPI-i’m not really a waitress

I almost always go with some shade of pink. It tends to go with most everything in my closet I hate when people get a good manicure in a bold color and then it clashes with what they are wearing. It drives me nuts. But now for bike week I like to go with a nice Harley shade of orange and of course bright red for Christmas. Hey you have to keep your man on his toes can’t have the same old same old all the time.

I always do to a pale to medium gray or blue-gray, I have several shades; some for summer and others better suited to fall and winter. The color always looks fresh, trendy and not too over the top. I feel like it’s a real neutral and doesn’t fight with choice of outfits or my makeup. Plus, it is more fun and a lot more interesting than my past fall backs of pale pink or nude.
gatormomx2 says:
My favorite is a classic red- always on the toes and clear for the hands.
Helen says:
Essie’s Wicked and OPI’s I Am Not a Waitress. I receive a lot of compliments when I wear these. I have a 22 year old daughter and a 19 year old daughter so I like to keep myself open to new trends.

I mix my own color in a basic nude but ALWAYS with some metallic flakes to give it extra shine. I am an artist and I try to mix a close to nude color to help elongate my fingers to make them look more elegant and not stumpy as many colors cut off the nail’s and make fingers look shorter or they make almost any skin tone look sickly. I ALWAYS get compliments on the colors I mix.

Lori says:
I just ordered 3 new shades from Zoya, a brand I hadn’t tried before. All are soft beigy-pinks, some with lilac hints. Lauren, Kennedy, and Avril are the shades I ordered and I love them ALL. They’re my favorite colors right now, along with Metro Chic and Run With It from OPI (or possibly Sephora by OPI). They just seem to go with everything. I also find the softer shades much more forgiving when it comes to application. With a dark shade, every speck you get on the cuticle will show up, and it makes me hyper-critical of my nails. Most dark colors take 2 coats to achieve the desired color, too – twice the opportunity to mess up.

In a couple of years those that are wearing the brown and blacks will be Fifty and over and will understand.
