{Style Expert} What do you think of this look?

Another fashion week FOF–but is she a fashion victim or a fashion champ?

FOF Terry Gibraltar: “The white boots are so unflattering on her, and the combo of heavy ruched skirt and fur trimmed jacket don’t do her any favors either. I really don’t like anything about this outfit! I say, start over.”

Terry Gibralter is the founder of Bespoke Custom Shopping Tours, carefully-crafted shopping “vacations” and a self-proclaimed, “fashion-obsessed” FOF.

FOF Susan Grant: “Coincidentally, I returned from Paris just a few hours ago and can report that white footwear is a big trend. That said, this isn’t a chic way of pulling it off. The look would work better if the boots were worn with an all black outfit and a longer skirt.”

Susan Grant is merchandise manager for Muse, a full-service jewelry showroom.

FOF Sherrie Mathieson: “A black-and-white palette can be well done–but she uses it to grab attention rather than enhance her body. The jacket narrows her shoulders, the skirt widens her hips, and her body length is chopped along the “checkerboard.” Would she switch the bottom to a sleek wide-legged black pant and black boot? Hope so!”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

FOF Gail Garramone: “The boots would work better with a less complicated look up top, perhaps a monochromatic one. And the proportion of the shoes to her legs is not right–she looks like she stepped into marshmallows.”

Gail Garramone is a veteran V.P. of Liz Claiborne Inc. where she traveled around the country with Tim Gunn producing fashion workshops.

Sandra Soich: “It’s wrong. This lovely lady just doesn’t have the right frame for this look….thick middle, heavy knees and calves. Everything is chopped and not flowing.”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

Sorry! That was for the wrong day! But, you know me and you know that birthday cake could also apply to today’s qtosuien! But I think my real answer is the trip to the beah Dan gave me where he proposed! YUM!!

  2. sharon910 says:

Love the jacket without the fur.

  3. Melanie says:

I agree it looks terrible on this person and the white shoes with black stockings looks awful. No taste or class at all.

  4. Sheila A Caruso says:

The white boots with the black nylons is a no no. The skirt is unattractive and she looks like she is dressed for spring with the white boots and winter with the coat and scarf. Make up your mind what season you are dressing for. That is a fashion tragedy.

    This is totally wrong!
Even for a topmodel with good proportions, this is just awful.
The jacket is too casual to match with the skirt, not to mention the white shoes with black tights (that are not thick enough, they should be opaque)
This is a typical example of mixing and matching black and white pieces without questioning the individual style of each item. Not only colours , but also fabric and style should be taken into account when combining your pieces to create a coordinating outfit. Lonneke

  6. Alfreda Constantino says:

This is my short comment, she looks terrible. Nothing seems to go together even though she’s wearing black and white. The fashion experts say “less is more” and they’re right on about this outfit. Throw the boa out. The lines of the jacket and the skirt are too poofy. A well tailored top and a pencil skirt would at least make her look more professional. If black hose and white shoes are the thing to wear, I hate it. Those awful looking white boot shoes and black hose cut her off at the ankle making her legs look fatter. She needs to cut the whole cuff off to make a sleeker line leading up to the skirt.

  7. Patricia Assanowicz says:

To be honest, she looks like she got dressed in the dark. I love the white boots, except they are lost on this outfit, the skirt I am honestly lost for words, this entire outfit is one of what I call a head turner, but in a bad way, I love when you are dressed to the 9’s and people actually take a double take of your outfit and complinment you, this is one where people look twice and try to figure out what happened here. She needs to start from scratch.

  8. Leslie Jean says:

Love the boots but not anything else. The outfit is an ill-fitting sloppy mess! Just my humble opinion.

I’d love to see the boots with something oolala!

  9. Barbara Flournoy says:

The fur boa looks like it was added as an afterthought. The skirt looks bulky and makes her hips look wide. At first glance, the back of the skirt almost looks like it is “caught” in her underwear (like someone did not tell her to pull her skirt down after she left the ladies room). The white boots catch the eye and takes away from her entire look but not in a flattering way. The boots almost look like orthopedic shoes (the kind you wear after foot surgery).

  10. Pam Diehl says:

Awful!!!!!!!!!!Does she have a mirror in her home?

  11. Cori Garrett says:

The woman looks ridiculous. With the dramatic contrast from the black hose to the white boots, it makes her legs look frumpy and shorter. Black boots would have been so much more chic and leg lengthing!

  12. cj says:

LOVE THE JACKET. LOVE THE SKIRT. LOVE THE BOOT. And I would use them to make three different outfits.

  13. Carol Segal says:

This look is terribly unflattering in all respects

  14. Catherine Davis says:

Perhaps if she had on a long black dress which would make her appear taller, it would work but not with her height. The whole entire outfit is a mess and personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in those shoes. They are ugly and them being white makes them standout even more. No, no, and no!!

  15. Debbie Martin says:

I think this woman made a valiant effort to make a classic black and white ensemble look interesting, but think she ignored her physique and tried just a little too hard. As she styled herself, I think she probably looked at the individual pieces and forgot to look at the total picture.

  16. Vicki Wobrock says:

The individual pieces are great, stylish pieces, but they do not work together. The biggest flaw is the contrast of black, opaque hose with the white boots. The most slimming “trick” for anyone is to blend from head to toe by wearing the right colors for hair color and skin tone and wearing the appropriate shapes, lengths, etc. for your body type. This outfit chops her image into blocks and pieces. The clothing also does not complement her body shape, e.g., jacket ends at the wrong place which does not flatter her hips. A jacket just a little longer would cover the hips and not bring as much attention to them. I give her credit for trying but this just doesn’t work! God bless her for trying!

  17. sharon says:

I definitely did not like it and that was before I read any of the comments by your experts. The boots just totally ruined the whole look. I certainly could use some help with my own wardrobe but I did know this was a disaster.

  18. trisha says:

First, it’s not Memorial Day yet– get rid of the white boots. Next, if you wore go-go boots in the 70’s you should not be wearing them now. Who makes things like these, and why would you buy them unless you were a rock star?

  19. Soledad says:

I think the jacket is cute. The whole overall look is just plain stupid!!

  20. Beth says:

I agree with all the experts! The whole outfit is wrong for this gal and the white shoes with black tights is a huge fashion fauxpau!

  21. Bj says:

If this is in, let me out!

  22. Linda F says:

So sorry, but it is terrible. It wouldn’t even look good on teenagers.

  23. cyndi says:

I totally agree. It is not a question of what’s hot and what is now, but what makes you look good. This outfit does nothing for the wearer that I see. By the way the fashion industry does no favors for tall women over a size 14 either. I am 61, but I am not dead. I like the clothes worn on the Golden Girls better that some of the crap that I see today.

  24. Diane says:

The same jacket, with tailored, more fitted black pants and the same boots in black would make her appear taller and slimmer. The skirt’s style as well as the length make her appear short and pudgy. I am way over fifty (almost 69) and I still pay close attention to how I look. Being older does not mean looking unkempt and frumpy!

  25. Marla Davis says:

The only pretty thing about that outfit is the coat but the tabs on the coat need to go. A pretty black skirt, black pants, or even skinny jeans would help show the coat off and make the whole look be more balanced. I think the white shoes are not that attractive with this outfit and putting them against the black stocking is too severe.

  26. Pat says:

Holy Black and White Cow! The Coat is acceptable, the animal wrap around her neck looks like road kill.. Her skirt looks like she went to the potty and got it caught in her underpanties…please tell her! Shoes totally out of place with everything else going on. Need I say more?

  27. Carol says:

I have never been able to stand dark-colored stockings with light-colored shoes. AWFUL!

  28. Carol says:

I have never been able to stand dark-colored stockings with light-colored shoes! AWFUL!!

  29. Tierney says:

  30. Marcia says:

Oh boy, this look is disastrous. The jacket and skirt do nothing to enhance her body shape and the black/white/black/white chops up her body even more. I love black and white together, but this is just not flattering — for her or anyone else, regardless of age.

  31. Mary says:

Love FOF’s in their own creations looking fiercer than a runway model. Personally, the shoes and the stockings make her calf muscles look HUGE! Not flattering combo of shoes and stockings, IMHO.

  32. Wende' says:

It’s so sad to see a woman fall victim to the latest fashion trends. Trends are just that. They are not meant for everyone. Women should be honest with themselves about their bodies when it comes to fashion. This look is completely disjointed and under balanced. I’m sure this woman’s body is much more proportioned then this outfit makes her appear. I like the jacket, but she needs to lose the skirt completely along with the black hose. A longer gored skirt or wide pants to balance the look with the shoes would help. She also needs to have a different blouse. A simple shell or cami under neath would lighten the top heavy fur.

  33. sherie says:

victim! victim! victim! what planet does she live on?

  34. Alene says:

Black boots would have been a little better, I believe. But, ya know, I was genetically doomed to heavy legs. I could be 100 lbs (and I have been), and it was all in my legs. Even avid running didn’t do it. So, I refuse to give her crap about her frame. She can wear whatever she wants! She’s over 50. It’s not what you look like; it’s what kind of person you are inside. And, if your husband (like mine) thinks you are hot, who cares what others think!!

  35. LakeLady says:

  36. Gina P says:

While I think people should wear whatever they’re comfortable in and what makes them feel good – fashion wise, at the very minimum she should’ve worn black shoes. If the skirt, tights, and shoes were color blocked, it wouldn’t look nearly as choppy. I think the jacket is too boxy and the skirt is I’ll fitting…there’s just a lot going on with that ruching on the side. With different pieces, everything would look okay..together, not so much. (says the woman typing while wearing gray sweatpants and a Flyers sweatshirt..)

  37. Marcia says:

  38. Sarah Noebels says:

Fashion Police Alert!!! Hose too dark for shoes, and shoes, well they are butt ugly! Black boots would have been better, but everything about this look is wrong.

  39. sharon91 says:

The top is great but not with the rest It cuts her in half. makes her look stubby The shoes are not great. They need to make cloths for us women over 60

  40. sweetbabyniece says:

The worst part of all is that this lady actually looked at herself in the mirror before leaving the house and thought this was a good look for her!

  41. Tina says:

YES, I do agree! This outfit is not a good look for the gal’s body type at all. She has managed to cut herself off by using the white coat over the ill-fitting black skirt and then again by putting the white boots on with the black tights. She is short and to add length, either a plain pencil skirt with the black tights and black boots/shoes or a long black skirt with black boots/shoes would be great! The white coat is not my first choice for her, but if it is her choice, she needs a sleeker scarf, something with some color, other than the oversized fur she is wearing.

  42. Teri Newman says:

She looks like a Lady Gaga wannabe. UGH!

  43. jane says:

    Oh, Hell No!

  44. Pat says:

When looking at her picture, your eyes are drawn to her feet. They stick out like sore thumbs. All her proportions are just wrong, its all wrong!!

  45. diane says:

Wrong, wrong, wrong! And what is up with that skirt anyway? Can’t figure it out ☺

  46. SallyG says:

She’s wearing some great pieces, but not together! That skirt is too full and gives her a dumpy look in the middle A longer pencil skirt would give her a better shape. The blousy skirt would be better with a figure-hugging top. Love the jacket and it would look so much better with tapered pants for a tailored look. Wait! Is the fur a separate piece? Did it come off a V-neck jacket or cardigan? It belongs back on the original garment. How about a soft black scarf tucked into the neck of the jacket. The slave-to-fashion boots prove some of us will buy anything if we think it’s “fashion!”

  47. Adrian says:

OMG this whole outfit is a complete misfit. I am shocked that this was put together. I would want a black skirt to fall to the knee and a tailored jacket and a white and black shoe to put the whole style together. The fur trimmed white jacket and the short skirt and white boots does not do this outfit justice. I think in general the fashion world forgets about the curvaceous, 14+ size women.

  48. CDS says:

    fashion victim

  49. Barbara says:

I too believe that we should go with our own style, not just what’s “in”. I am not one whit moved by what they are wearing in Paris. That being said this outfit is just wrong, from head to toe wrong! She isn’t flattering herself one bit. Yes please – a do over.

  50. Robyn E. says:

    Not for work……please

  51. Shirley Hodge says:

She looks like a s’more without the crackers. Actually to my taste I wouldn’t wear the boot/shoes or that jacket with anything. At 75 I long ago learned that my own taste is best for moi not because I have perfect taste but because I think being comfortable in what you wear is the first step to appearing well dressed.

  52. Chris says:

The jacket is fabulous and would look much better over all black from head to toe. For a pop of color, she could add a wonderful Hermes scarf around her neck.

The open-toed white shoes over black stockings ruin this outfit.

  53. KAT MCCARTHY says:

too much!!! boots suck……so doesnt the skirt, jackets ok..

  54. Cathy B says:

Wow! After leaving NYC 28 years ago and observing all it’s fun stuff in the city, especially what those 10th and 11th Avenue hookers were wearing, it just warms my heart to see that the hookers are now able to afford better clothing and are sooo ultra-fashionable and financially well-off…but it seems that taste and elegance still eludes them! Well, at least they’re covering up their legs and their underwear or lack of it isn’t showing…that’s all been co-opted by Lindsay Lohan!

  55. Linda Arzoumanian says:

Who cares what is “in” if it looks like you stepped into a waded into a marshmellow from a black swamp. It looked really bad.

  56. dolores says:

The outfit is tacky there is to much going on. Is the skirt defective or is it static cling on the side? The boot shoe is a bit much. I think a long skirt or a pair of pants would have looked better with this jacket..

  57. Vera J says:

Ouch! Although I applaud her for trying, I think she got everything wrong. This outfit wouldn’t look good on someone young with a great body.

She needs to just start over.

  58. judyb says:

And another thing: these “judges” are fashion industry insiders….they don’t know what normal people like! come on, FOF, use REAL women over 50.

  59. judyb says:

IMHO, who cares what’s hot. Especially over 50 women. The majority of women I know couldn’t give a care about “what’s hot” and these are the women with the money to spend on clothing. I am very frustrated with the fashion industry in ignoring the women over 50.
