Paired with a tunic, big sweater, cardigan or even long, layered tees, a great pair of leggings can become a wardrobe staple. But the wrong leggings can result in muffin tops, panty-lines and jiggling. So we sent our fashion scouts on a search for the perfect FOF leggings. Here . . . their picks.
Lysse Leggings, $54 and up. (Recommended by FOF Style Scout Linda Cohen.)
FOF Beth Gold Cohen, 58, a longtime retail buyer for Macy’s, was 52 when she was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. The treatments caused her to gain a lot of weight in a short time. “I always liked to wear leggings,” she explains, “But now the waistband cut right into my stomach…or rolled down completely.” Her solution was to hand sew in a control top that smoothed her waist and eliminated the muffin top. Today, Beth is cancer-free and the founder and president of Lysse Leggings, a line with a cult following. “It’s 4-way stretch and 14-percent Spandex–which is a lot for a cotton legging. It really holds you in everywhere,” she explains. “The waist sits high, and there’s an extra shapewear component in the waistband that eliminates the muffin top.” Plus, leave a comment below to enter to win your own pair!
Apifeni Leggings, $78 and up.
Danielle Dobin, 38, designed Apifeni leggings with post-pregnancy mommies in mind, but soon after launch, she saw that over 50 percent of her customers were FOFs. “As we age, our muscles relax a bit–our skin isn’t as firm,” she says. “My leggings are ultra high-waisted–they go right up to the bra line–so they eliminate any rolls and smooth you out.” An added bonus: they won’t reveal your belly when you bend over to do pushups or downward dogs at the gym. To get the perfect fit, Danielle suggests contacting an Apifeni Style Director in your area.
Flexees Shapewear Leggings by Maidenform, starting at $24.
“They really suck you in, and you can still breath!” says FOF Style Guru Glenyse Thompson, founder of Styleosophy. “If you have some wobble in your thighs and backside, these conceal it. Tunics and sweaters just glide over them. My trick is to go up a size. I normally would wear a medium; in Flexees I buy a large to get the extra length at the waistline and ankles. Seriously, I own 6 pairs.”
One woman will win a pair of Tight Ankle Lysse Leggings [value: $58] in her size. To enter, answer this question in the comments below: What would you like our style scouts to find next? (tshirts? jeans? comfortable shoes?)

Jeans for curvy and over 50.

A sports bra for those of us that are over a D cup. 🙂
Susan Roberts says:
More fashion for common women in the small town midwest, consisting of jeans, blouses, t-shirts and shoes. I find reading your fashions, that they are more geared towards the east and west coast women.
Karen LaRussa says:
Proper length and shape of a flattering t-shirt would be a topic I would be interested in. I am always trying on t-shirts that are boxy, too long, too short, too thin (fabric-wise), or with a neckline that is either too high or lose and low. Where to buy a quality t-shirt in basic colors is a must for me.
Regina Hibben says:
Got to try these leggings or better yet maybe
I will win! Loved the review!

Tammy hill says:
So glad to see this. I knew I wasn’t the only one that had problem of leggings and hose rolling down. Now I would like to find a line of heels that look classy without my feet killing me at work. I’m 50 this year carrying a little extra weight but like to dress up business casual for office. Help!
Cheryl Arrington says:
Finally someone wants to help the FOF to make quality choices without trying on so many that do not fit right. I would like see comfortable shoes but stylish for commuting to work.
Thank You
Kathy says:
With spring around the corner, I would like to see the do’s and don’t of capri’s…what length for which body style. There are many different kinds of capri’s and don’t know which is better for me.
Barbara says:
I’d love your style scouts to find really great quality t-shirts, in plus sizes.
My problem is finding good princess or shaped t-shirts, that are heavy enough to drape well and not cling.
If I find one that fits well, after a gentle few hand washes they loose their shape and drape. Even though they may feel wonderful st purchase, they’re full of sizing and other treatments that wash right out, leaving me with a thin limp rag that barely resembles a t-shirt.
Thanks!
KC says:
I would love to try a pair of these leggings. During my childbearing years, I suffered with many female ailments that caused the need for 7 pelvic surgeries over my lifetime. Now I suffer with severe adhesion issues, and the complications that arise from them. There are some days I simply cannot wear pants with regular waistbands, the pain/bloating in my abdomen just wont allow it. I’d love to try a pair of these, especially on days I need to look pulled together, even when my body doesn’t cooperate.
I’d love to see the FOF crew explore comfortable, yet stylish shoes.
Nancy Boie says:
I am 52 and flabby. Need to try leggings that work for me. Have tried man, all but given up.

tees that look good not frumpy and not teen looking yest still sassy and fun
rexterrier1 says:
Black is the best to wear, it makes you look skinnier! I like wearing leggings. Now if I could have the most comfortable bra like it wasn’t even on!
kitblu says:
The leggings claim to fit women from 5′ to 5’10” but there is no selection for petite, regular and tall. I am 5’6″ but I need petite clothes in order to fit crotch and leg length. I doubt these leggings will fit me.
I would appreciate if you would next feature comfortable shoes but probably my definition of comfortable is not the norm. For comfort I need flat heels, strong arch support, large toe box (that means no point) and a straight last. Years ago a salesperson told me that the best shoes showed a straight line from toe to heel. I can no longer find any shoes that fit that requirement.
pam boyd says:

Tracey says:
I would love to find a workout top for walking outside in hot weather. All I find are skimpy tops with no or little bust support; or tops that are way too “form fitting”. Right now I walk in old tee shirts.
marlene says:

cathylwood says:

My biggest wardrobe challenge is finding a pair of jeans. I have a love/hate relationship with them. Still on the hunt for the holy-grail (the perfect fitting pair of jeans). Is it a myth? I’m a size 6, curvy with a small waist and J-Lo booty.
Jeans seem to be my nemesis!
Marcia says:
Love leggings. Would like to see jeans next.
Christine Quigley says:
Awesome! I love all these leggings! With all the cute tunic tops that are popular right now they’d make the perfect outfit!
poseyt says:
I absolutely love these leggings…..I never knew that there were leggings with tummy control…..Awesome!! I don’t even own a pair because the ones I have tried bunched up at the ankles and were too high waisted….I looked really awful in them. I think that they look so cute even on women over 50 with a tunic and flats….adorable!!Thanks so much. I will have to look into these immediately.!!
Joanne Newton says:
I would like to see some jeans for FOFs — taking into account price point, comfort in the mid-section, and style!
Jeanie says:
I would love to try these leggings. I have a cheaper pair and really do not have a stylish top that flatters me when pairings leggings, so I don’t wear them. I have no butt and nice legs but my waist is non existant these days. I hate looking like a pregnant (but fashionable) 54 year old woman! This is where sensible and stylish tops need to be considered for us!! I love the embellished tops or even stylish t shirts but they need to flatter not accentuate our flaws.
DBentley says:
Would very much like to see a piece on jeans! I’m starting to think I’m just going to have to give them up 🙁
Love leggings though……..and would love to try these!
martha CrAIG says:
longer tunics to wear with your fabo leggings and comfy shoes & tee shirs that hide your back fat
poseyt says:
Oh my gosh…these leggings sound amazing!! I have been trying to find a pair as we speak but the ones I have tried on wrinkle by the ankles and stretch out, which drives me nuts. I really have to be careful when buying leggings because I have no butt. These leggings sound like they would help lift my butt and at the same time tighten my upper thighs. I would love to try your leggings. Thank you for considering me for this promotion.
poseyt says:
I would love for the scouts to find jeans that are flattering on women over 50. I absolutely hate “Not my daughter’s jeans” the waist is too high and they look like they are for a women over 70. I hate the low waisted ones and I am sure that most women my age would agree. We want the decorations on the back pockets and the worn look but we do not want muffin top. A jean that sits right below your belly button and is slenderizing. Thank you for taking my comments into consideration.
MissPriss48 says:
I agree with you about the jeans!
Posey Thomson says:
Hi, Thanks for your comment. I consider myself a hip 56 year old and it’s not that I want to look younger…it is merely that I want to look and feel good for 56. I want jeans to flatter my body…not to show the lumps and bumps that some of us have at this stage in our lives. I want some designer to come up with a jean that…..number one, is to die for…….number two, that fits our shapes to the tee……. last of all… not 200 dollars a pair. One that is affordable to the average woman. With Baby boomer women being in the majority you would think that there would be a designer biting at the bit to take this issue on.
MissPriss48 says:
You hit the nail on the head.I feel exactly the same way! I wish I could make those jeans you mentioned and make a fortune!!!!! And make Women feel great bout themselves, too!
Penny says:

Jeans that inhance my (oh, woe!) my flat butt.
kathi fincham says:
Keeping in line with the leggings idea, I would like to see them find more tops for us FOF’s. I love leggings, and am always looking for tunic type tops to go with them. I order a lot of stuff from catalogs because I live in Podunkville, and I am disappointed more often than not when I receive my order and find it only comes just past my butt – not much help when you want to cover thunder thighs! I found one catalog that sells tunics in different lengths but I have bought all they have in 34 inches…… I love this look, but I’m quickly running out of options!! I’m only 5 foot 4 inches, so you would think things would hit me longer, but I seem to find very few true long tunics – it’s mostly just plus sized blouses that fit loose. Help!!

Elyse says:
As a buxom FOF, I’m always looking for bras that offers great support with great looks – a combination that is extremely hard to find. Most bras that are supportive are so unattractive! Why can’t a “good” bra also be pretty? I’d also love to win a pair of leggings!
kirsten corcoran says:
Comfortable (but cute!) shoes.
joan thiel says:
Ok, I am 65 a little overweight and going to Weight Watchers to try and get rid of the flab. I love leggings and use to wear them. If any of these would look good on someone like me and be comfortable, I would gladly love to win a pair. Heck I would even pay for them.

kathie says:
Tunics to wear with my new leggings! Although, I am always looking for the perfect FOF tunic…
1. must be long enough to cover my bulging belly.
2. Since my belly is so big, my pants pull super tight over my crotch area and I prefer my shirt to cover this…but I also don’t want to look like I’m wearing a dress over leggings…picky, I know.
3. love empire look on young ladies, makes me look like like an FOF preggie….no thanks.
4. I love the sheer look but honestly, when I’m standing in the light, there “shows” my belly again…so I would love a tunic that’s not too sheer or clingy.

Jeans, jeans and jeans and reasonably priced ones at that! I live in them and could not say I owned one pair that fit the way I wish they did. May be a really tough assignment tho since we all have such different body shapes. I am a size 4 but nothing fits right at the waist if I get then to fit in the hip and thigh. Maybe I need shapewear? But with jeans? Aaarrrggghhh

Shoes, please!! Comfortable and cute….:)

I would love it if the style scouts could find flattering, fashionable jeans that hold you in, disguise the muffin top and don’t scream “Mom jeans”! And here’s the kicker – make it a real world price – around $30. If I’m paying $80 for an article of clothing, I’ll be wearing it to an event

Cute, cute skirts for both the workplace and for weekends.

I would like to see styles for work that aren’t matronly but not too young looking either.

I would love comfortable shoes….I love shoes but I’ve noticed lately alot of the designers qualities have gone down especially if you’re looking at lower heels or flats…they’re not made for women who actually walk and use the shoes on an everyday basis. I actually like to wear my shoes!
erica says:
Oh…yes, PLEASE…comfortable shoes that are both stylish and fit wide feet. Why do manufacturers think that if you have wide feet you want only black shoes??? My mother and her sisters all had bunions and my sister and I and all our cousins have them too.

Anna Lapping says:
I think I’m in the minority here. I live in the South and most of what you show on your site is way too dressy for the way we live here, even for work. I would like to see some business casual clothes, and some shoes that I can go shopping in as well as chase the dogs.
lydianna says:
ahhh, if you could find cute comfortable shoes for both day and evening, well I would be ever so grateful….
ktpotat says:
cute flats something Audrey would wear
Karen says:
I’d like to find cute shoes that work for women with knee and feet problems. I have arthritis in my knees and it is difficult to find shoes that are cute yet cushion and support the foot. It would be a bonus if you could find cute shoes that accept orthotics.
Eileen says:
These look like a “Fab”ulous find.
Ann says:

I HAVE SEEN THE LYSSE LEGGINGS..THE APIFENI ONES LOOK GOOD TOO!! LOOK FORWARD TO TRYING THEM. LOVE LEGGINGS, DRESS THEM UP OR DOWN. IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE YOUR STYLE SCOUTS FIND JEANS FOR US FOF WOMEN. I THINK ANYTHING FOF SCOUTS FIND WOULD BE GREAT!!!! SHOE IDEAS ARE GOOD!!!

I have recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and gained 20 pounds in about 3 months. The medication is still being adjusted, but I haven’t lost any of the weight. Frustrating. I’ve been trying to find leggings that are comfortable and this might just be the answer. A bit pricey for my income though (my husband is currently unemployed and we’re living on a single income). Would love to try!
Pat says:
I would love to have the scouts find truly comfortable shoes that are not completely flat.
Merry says:
I just received my first pair of Lysse Leggings and they are everything I anticipated based on the on-line video. Now that I have tried them on and see how much I love them, having a second pair would be divine!!

PS: The time/date post needs to be corrected. I sent my comment at 9:25 ish AM (Arizona) and the comment posted at 4:25 PM. Now , even with all the time zones in the US, I still think the time/date needs to be adjusted on FOF’s site.

Sherri Gorbey says:
Sweaters & jeans that are age appropriate and come in smaller (and tall) sizes. I am 5’11” and a size 4-6 and it’s very hard to find clothing in the ‘women’s’ section that fits me properly. There are plenty of talls/longs and smaller sizes in the junior’s section, but little of it appeals to me. I would love for designers to understand that not everyone in their 40’s and 50’s is short and overweight.
CeciliaLark says:
Style Scouts, could we please find some tshirts with flattering necklines for FOF? I’m wanting some great fabrics, but that neckline is important. A crewneck does nothing for my figure (or decollatage) and a sporty v-neck doesn’t look right either. What are some options for a dressier T?
Debbie W. says:
I would like FOF to scout comfortable but stylish shoes!
Deanna Gale says:
Love the leggings. After having twins 28 years ago, my tummy’s never been the same. Any item of clothing that may help to “suck the flab” in is an item I need!!
Thereislightonthehorizon says:
Finding the “right” plus sized clothing (with the models being plus sized) would be heaven sent 🙂 There are so many specialty brands/groups that say they have plus size fashions yet the models (who look marvelous in the styles) are not really representative of what the clothing really looks like on these sizes.
Jeanne T says:
I’m in dance and leggings are a must for class! I am always hunting for some that are cotton, not nylon, based. These Lysse look great. The Apifeni also have that nice high feature.
I think the style scouts should hunt for dress-for-services (at some religious institution, church, synagogue, etc.) especially as now one doesn’t generally wear skirts and stockings.
barb m says:
These legging look awesome; I haven’t worn leggings since I was in my teens, so consider me brave now 😉
I am with the other ladies who want to find a shoe which is comfy (I have nerve damage in my foot so can’t wear heels for long,) but still look cute not orthopedic! Thanks! 🙂

Shoes that are comfortable and stylish.
anisemarsh says:
it would be great to win a pair of these leggings. I have learned that leggings are a basic wardrobe piece these days. They can go under dresses and tunics, go out to dinner and out to the gym, not to mention work. And they can be modest or daring.
ageless dressing,
Pat says:
I would love to see something on long flowing tops.
kdivasilver says:
Oh, you hit the spot with comfortable shoes. Shoes that look good, that I can walk in, have cushioning, and are on reasonable heels (2″) would be heavensent. Ginger says:
I would love to give these a try. Thank you
Sue Zabritski says:
Jeans! Jeans that hold in my stomach, make my legs look long, are casual, and I can wear with flats. So many are so long you must wear heels. I just want to be comfortable!
joanne says:
I wear leggings alot, jean leggings/cord leggings, I have been wearing HUE. They replace sweats on the weekends, and look stylish with a long sweater and wedges, even boots, even ballet flats. I want to try other brands, and would love a pair of black leggings, boot cut…petite, please.

I desperately NEED comfortable, stylish shoes to go with a skirt – shoes that can handle European cobblestones from dawn to dusk, shoes that don’t look as if they belong on Frankenstein, AND that come in a wide width. Oh, yeah, might as well ask for World Peace…

I’d love a pair of control leggings that look good on my legs. Even better, let’s find a pair of straight-legged jeans with a reasonable waist to crotch length (an inch or 2 below the waist) that fit. I don’t want to spend my whole life in fitting rooms looking for them.
Wienerwane says:
Love these! I usually don’t buy due to my age but if Diane can wear them and look great so can I! She is a lot older than me!

I wear high heels to work everyday – and my feet and legs hate them (bunions!)….I love the styles and the beauty of todays heels but I can’t wear them….please find some stylish shoes in a wide width that don’t look orthoepedic or “old lady-ish!” Flats are not flattering on me at all – so they aren’t an option!

I would LOVE to find a pair of comfortable wedges with an adjustable strap on the back. I’m not ready to give up 2+ inch heels yet, but most are way too uncomfortable, and I need to adjustable strap because shoes rarely come in 10 1/2, so I have to take 11.
