{Test This} Mai Couture Papier Foundation

—————————————————————————————————

Mai Couture Makeup’s new Foundation Powder Papier (retail value: $24) comes in a pocket-sized booklet with 50 one-time-use sheets–ideal for makeup application and touch ups while you’re on the go. The powder paper comes in three shades: fair glow, golden glow and nude glow. You don’t need a makeup brush, which, according to Mai Couture, “often carries bacteria that can irritate sensitive skin.” Instead, tear off a sheet, sweep it over your face and buff and smooth out the powder to finish.

The mineral-based powder is also paraben and talc free. “It softens the appearance of imperfections, evens out skin tone and controls oil without the mess.” Sounds good on paper…but what do you think FOFs?

10 FOFs will test it. Click here to find out more about Mai Couture Foundation Powder Papier, and then leave a comment below for a chance to test it.

{Tested} Cosmedix Cell ID

—————————————————————————————————

Cosmedix Cell ID Intensive Defense Serum is loaded with antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes and “the ultimate mitochondria extract,” which “energizes skin cells,” and in turn, helps to “reduces visible wrinkle depth…fine lines and…age spots,” according to the Cosmedix website.

But all those promises don’t come cheap–Cosmedix Cell ID retails for $100 per half ounce. We wanted to know: Is this product really worth the hefty price tag, or is it just a bottle of bull? We sent it out to 5 beauty testers who reported back, below.

**Quick take: 2 out of 5 testers would recommend Cosmedix Cell ID Intensive Defense Serum to other FOFs.**

Lynda Christian – Hazelwood, MO

Was this product easy to use?
Yes. The dispenser was a pump so you could measure it out more precisely.  However, toward the end [it became difficult to dispense so] I took the pump out and tried to shake out the remaining amount.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
It reduced the appearance of the age and sun spots I have on my face. I started to see noticeable fading.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
My face felt well hydrated and smooth, but [it could have been because] I exfoliated a few times a week as part of my normal routine.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? I wish I had seen a difference in the fine lines around my eyes and the deeper wrinkles in my forehead, but I did not.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
No. It costs $100 for a very small amount. I used a dime-size portion, twice a day (per the instructions) which only allows you about a month’s supply. Also, I thought the color was an ugly yellow–almost like phlegm when you have a cold.  I was also put off by the fragrance.  There were times when I felt almost nauseous to the point where I didn’t want to use it. I asked my husband to smell it and he said, ‘It’s not that bad.’

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
I would not recommend it.

—————————————————————————————————

Christine M. Quigley – Lakewood, CO

Was this product easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Minimal changes. The texture improved slightly.

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
It felt a little drier, but smooth. It really dried out my skin when I applied a heavier layer–in fact, it produced dry flaky patches. I still have one above my upper lip.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines or age spots?
No–I did not notice a difference.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
No, I did not feel it was that effective, and the stem inside the bottle broke off after two weeks of use.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
No.

Constance Simon — Winston Salem, NC

Was this product easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Immediately! I noticed a slight tightening of my skin. [It was] not overbearing but certainly noticeable.

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
YES! The appearance, not so much, but the feel–indeed. My skin is so incredibly soft. [When] my son kisses me on my cheek, [he] compliments me on how soft my skin is…like a baby’s! Even my fiance thinks so. I do appreciate that. My skin is a combination of oily and dry, but when I use Cell ID it is perfect–it’s not oily nor dry. I don’t even have to use a moisturizer with it.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
A small difference in the fine lines under and around my eyes. Others seemed to notice the difference more than I did. I don’t have any age spots, so I can’t comment on that. I don’t have many wrinkles except on my brow and I did notice my skin was slightly smoother, there.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
I will continue to use this product and will actually buy it again from time to time when I can afford it. I like having soft supple skin. I also felt like I got good UV protection from it as well.

Would you recommend it to other FOFs?
Yes. It does have a slight medicine smell, which dissipates quickly. It’s slightly expensive, but worth the results.

—————————————————————————————————

Sydney Barrows–New York, N.Y.

Was this product easy to use?
Yes, but if you push the pump down the whole way, it dispenses too much. Be careful to not push it down all the way! The texture was lovely, it spread nicely, and you could do your entire face and the top part of your neck with 2/3 of a pump. One more pump will take care of the rest of the neck and the chest–perfect!

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
After about ten days, I noticed that the texture of my skin was smoother. It also looked healthier–there really was a noticeable difference.

Did you notice a difference in the way your skin felt?
It was definitely smoother, and my makeup went on more smoothly too. It acted like a primer, but it also improved your skin at the same time.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
Because the skin was smoother, the fine lines were a bit less noticeable, but it did nothing for wrinkles or age spots that I could discern.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
For $30 or under–definitely, yes.  If it was more than that and I was doing well–probably yes.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
Yes, if you have fairly nice skin and mild wrinkles, it will definitely enhance the overall appearance of your skin, make it look smoother and healthier, and make the fine lines less noticeable. I’m not sure how effective it would be for someone who had badly damaged skin and/or bad wrinkles.

—————————————————————————————————

Rhonda Grant–Yorktown, Indiana

Was this product easy to use?
Extremely easy. It was slightly tacky when first applied, but the sticky feel rapidly dissipates to a pleasant smoothness. There was a mild medicinal odor, although it was not at all offensive and disappeared once application was complete.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Yes, some. My skin seemed to retain moisture better. It felt extremely soft, and the usual oiliness seemed to lessen.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
I did not see a large difference in fine lines, wrinkles or age spots.  Actually, the pores on my between-the-eye area and on my nose were more noticeable while using the product.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
Probably not.  The [minimal] changes were not worth the price.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
I do not believe I could, with good conscience, recommend this product to others.

{Test This} Dr. Dennis Gross Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel

—————————————————————————————————

Dr. Dennis Gross, MD, is a renowned New York dermatologist with a roster of celebrity patients. In the early 90s, he launched his first at-home product, the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, designed to bring his signature, skin perfecting formula to the rest of us. Since then, his skin empire has expanded to hundreds of products, but the Alpha Beta Peel is still his #1 best-seller. Now, he’s launched a new Extra Strength version (retail value: $88 for 30 applications), designed to help those women who haven’t responded to other peels.

The two-step peel comes in the form of two containers of pre-soaked towelettes (similar to makeup remover pads.) Step one contains a proprietary blend of five different acids, including Alpha and Beta Hydroxy that Dr. Dennis Gross promises will minimize the appearance of pores, wrinkles and fine lines, and leave you with firmer, brighter, more even skin. Step two contains retinol, natural antioxidants–such as Resveratrol and green tea extract–and Genistien, an ingredient in soy extract that boosts collagen production and also soothes the skin. Sounds apeeling but does it actually work?

6 FOFs will test it. Click here to find out more about Dr. Dennis Gross’ Extra Strength Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, and then leave a comment below for a chance to test it.

{Tested} Glytone Anti-Aging Trio

—————————————————————————————————

Glytone’s new anti-aging set–a serum, daytime moisturizing cream and an eye cream–will “significantly reduce the visible signs of aging,” according to Glytone’s marketing materials. The products all contain a patented glycolic acid system, formulated to be as effective as the glycolic exfoliating treatments you’d find in a doctor’s office. The products are also packed with Vitamins C and E and boast some unconventional antioxidants like Red Tea Flavonoids and Licorice Extract, said to “offset everyday environmental damage from sun exposure, pollution and stress.”

Six FOFs put the $258-value set to the test. Was it three cheers for this trio?
**Quick take: 6 / 6 testers would recommend Glytone’s Anti-Aging Trio**

Eoan Russell – Jersey City, NJ

Was this product easy to use?
Extremely easy. After cleansing with the mild gel cleanser, the anti-aging serum, cream and eye cream were light and easy to apply.

Did you notice any changes in your skin?
My skin appeared softer and smoother. The fine lines on my nose appeared to decrease in size. I have very sensitive skin and most products make me break out, but not with these products.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

What changes did you notice?
I noticed that after application, my enlarged pores appeared smaller. My skin became smoother and the fine lines around my nose seemed less pronounced.

Did you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines wrinkles, and uneven skin tones and textures?
The product did not eliminate uneven skin tones or fine lines, but made the unevenness appear less uneven and my enlarged pores seem smaller.

Would you continue using these products – why or why not?
Yes.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes. I saw so much change over the short period of time that I used this product, that I’ve stopped using my previous anti-aging products.

—————————————————————————————————

Ruta Fox – Greenville, SC

Were these products easy to use?
Yes. The instructions were clear. Nothing unusual.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Yes, I thought my skin improved a lot with visible changes.

What changes did you notice?
My skin was clearer, tighter, refreshed and more renewed. I seemed to get less pimples too.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
Yes, my skin looked smoother. It was more toned and had a better texture.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Yes, they definitely work. My only concern was that for the price, it wasn’t really a “luxurious” experience. There was no fragrance in the products and the serum was a little “watery.” Additionally, the caps on the two bottles of serum and moisturizer were interchangeable. I put the wrong one on the serum and could not get it off, so the glass dropper on the serum broke.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, it’s a good line for people who don’t want any fragrance in their products.

—————————————————————————————————

Lelani Rogers – Fayetteville, GA

Were these products easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Yes.

What changes did you notice?
After 3 weeks, my skin started to look different–more clear and clean.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
I can’t say that it eliminated any wrinkles, maybe fine baby wrinkles. It did not get rid of age spots, but overall it definitely improved the texture, tone, look and feel of my face.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I will definitely finish what I have left. The cost is high. I probably would not spend that kind of money for 6-8 weeks of skincare, but maybe, because I definitely see improvement.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes. You have to be disciplined–wash and apply 3 products in the morning. In the evening wash your face again and apply the eye cream.

—————————————————————————————————

Cynthia Knisley – Sparta, MI

Were these products easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
My skin felt smoother to the touch. I believe the glycolic acid removed the dead dry skin cells and helped my other products to penetrate better.

What changes did you notice?
Improved appearance of existing wrinkles and a brighter, clearer, younger appearance.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
I think it helped prevent further aging.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Most certainly.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, as long as they don’t have sensitive skin. Glycolic acid can be harsh on sensitive skin.

—————————————————————————————————

Sue Roberts – Polk City, FL

Were these products easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
The overall quality of my skin has improved.

What changes did you notice?
Fine lines are less noticeable, deep wrinkles have improved and the area around my eyes appears to be brighter. The biggest difference is in the evenness of the tone. My acne scars, sun damage and age spots seem to have improved the most.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I would love to continue to use these products, and have made an appointment with the dermatologist to try and do just that. Based on the improvement in my skin, I believe it would be worth the investment.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
I would highly recommend them to anyone willing to put in the time. You will not have drastic or immediate results, but you will get results. We took before and after pictures and there is a definite difference.

—————————————————————————————————

Sharron Ledrick – Richland Hills, TX

Were these products easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Very few.

What changes did you notice?
None significant enough to point out.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
Not really. I liked the eye cream the best–it seemed to glide on. I noticed some slight peeling from the other two products.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I would continue using the eye cream. The other two products, I am not so sure.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, I would. My skin is very dry, and this might be the reason I couldn’t see a big difference. One complaint–the red paint on the anti-aging serum bottle was peeling off and got on my face.

{Test This} Couture Gel Nail Polish Kit

It seemed like gel manicures were the answer to our prayers–the chip-free, smudge-less gel polish dries in two minutes flat and maintains an unworldly shine…for weeks! We’re sold on the concept, but not so much on the $40-per-application salon bill.

So, when we heard that Couture Gel Nail Polish released a kit which provides you with “everything you need for a salon-quality gel nail polish manicure at home”–we couldn’t help but wonder: was this the perfect ten?

The kit retails for $129 and contains 3 shades of polish, a base coat, a top coat, a salon nail care kit, a zippered carrying case, a UV lamp and an instructional DVD. The manufacturer promises “easy application,” a “2-minute dry time that results in diamond-hard nails,” “a 3-week hold that continues to look fresh until you take it off,” and “no smearing, chipping, smudging, or scratching off — ever.” Did they nail it with this one? We want to know! 7 FOFs will test this at-home gel manicure kit.

{Giveaway} Pure Inventions Trio

—————————————————————————————————

FOFs Lynne Gerhards and Lori Mulligan are giving away three bottles (approx. 180 servings) of Pure Inventions, their flavored water enhancer. Enter to win by answering in the comments below: Next to water, what do you drink most?

Anyone who has been on a diet–whether to lose weight or get healthy–knows what the beverage options are: water, water and more water. So healthy! So boring! That’s why FOFs Lynne Gerhards and Lori Mulligan, two nutritionists and friends, created Pure Inventions liquid water enhancer, a calorie-free, chemical-free, sodium-free, nutritious water enhancer. The drops–which are portable and can be added to any flat or carbonated water–range in flavor from vanilla creme and pineapple coconut to peach and chocolate cocoa. And they actually taste delicious…we tried them. “If you replace one 20-ounce sugary beverage a day, you’ll cut 9,000 calories of sugar per month,” says Lynne. We’ll drink to that! Here we chat with Lori and Lynne about Pure Inventions and staying healthy after fifty.

What did you two do before you created Pure Inventions?
Lynne: Lori was raising a family and I was running a country club. We got our certified clinical nutrition degrees and opened up a practice in September 2001.

Lori: We wanted to create something that would get our clients to drink more water.
We worked with scientists–giving them the concept that we wanted–and they figured out how to fit it all in that little bottle. In addition to flavor, the drops also provide antioxidants, fruit extracts, green tea extracts and other nutritional benefits.

Do Pure Inventions extracts contain sweetener?
Lori: Yes. Many of our clients wanted to go off diet soda, but were still looking for something sweet tasting. We use extract from the Lo-han fruit. It’s nicknamed the ‘longevity fruit,’ because it grows in countries that have an unusually high number of residents who live past 100. It’s also low glycemic, has zero calories and is one hundred times sweeter then sugar. It’s used in Chinese medicine for digestion, respiratory problems and regulating blood sugar. The other sweetener we use is Stevia. It’s from the Stevia plant, has no chemicals, and there’s no processing. It’s also great for digestion and blood sugar.

Why is Pure Inventions important for FOFs?
Lori: With menopause, your metabolism slows down, and you gain weight. You can age quicker if you’re not eating well and exercising. This can at least solve the drink issue–to get you off soda, diet soda and sugary drinks.

Do you have a favorite flavor?
Lori and Lynne: The vanilla creme. When you add it to sparkling water, it tastes like cream soda! We also like using our fruit extracts over plain yogurt or oatmeal or as a cocktail mixer.

{Beauty} Bottle of Tricks: 8 polishes that perform

It ain’t just paint anymore…  Nail polish manufacturers are reaching deep into their bottles of tricks and putting out futuristic polishes that do everything from fight fungus to change color with your mood. Jane Jetson, are you listening?

Two top podiatrists, Dr. Adam Cirlincione and Dr. William Spielfogel, were tired of seeing patients with brittle, discolored and fungus-laden nails. Knowing that a leading cause of these unsightly disorders are the toxins in many commercial nail polishes, they set out to create their own non-toxic, anti-fungal products. The result: Dr.’s REMEDY Enriched Nail Polish which uses all-natural ingredients including garlic bulb (known to fight fungus and bacteria) and tea tree oil (known to have antiseptic and anti-fungal qualities).

{Tested} StriVectin-TL Tightening Neck Cream

—————————————————————————————————

Let’s talk turkey…Beauty manufacturer StriVectin promises that their TL Tightening Neck Cream (retail value: $89) will tone that turkey neck within two weeks. The cream is made with NIA-114, a “proprietary form of vitamin B3” discovered during skin cancer research and shown to “strengthen skin.” We called fowl on this turkey neck tightener but sent some to our FOF testers just to be sure. What’d they think? Was this turkey neck tightener for the birds… or a golden egg? Read on.

.

Quick take: 4 out of 5 testers would recommend this to other FOFs.

—————————————————————————————————

JOANN MELTON, Florissant, MO

Was this product easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes in your neck?
This product was amazing. I expected to see some instant, temporary improvement. But, by day three I could see visible, lasting results including firming and smoothing. Every day forward the results improved upon the previous applications. The turkey neck has not reappeared even on days when I was less diligent about applying it.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

Would you continue using this product? Why or why not?
I plan to. It’s not in my typical price range for product purchases, but I can see that [given] the [results] per application, it’s not expensive.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
Absolutely. It addressed the skin issues that maturing brings, without causing redness or irritation. I have sensitive areas of my skin, so this was a major plus.

—————————————————————————————————

ANGIE EHLERS, Aurora, CO

Was this product easy to use?
Very easy. It goes on smoothly and has a great texture. It smells nice and is not too greasy.

Did you notice any changes in your neck?
Very noticeable results instantly. The results were long lasting.

Would you continue using this product? Why or why not?
Yes. This is something wonderful, new, and worth it! I would use it over and over again. It works like nothing else I have ever bought.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
I’d recommend it to anyone looking for an instant lift!

—————————————————————————————————

THERESA MELTON , Cleveland, TN

Was this product easy to use?
Yes, very easy. The jar opened easily even when my hands were slightly damp from washing them and my face. The little paddle supplied was just the right size to scoop out a proper dose. By using the paddle, I knew the remaining product was not contaminated, which happens when you have to scoop out product with your fingers. The instructions included were written in about every major language on the planet and were easy to understand.

Did you notice any changes in your neck?
Unfortunately, not a single change of any kind. I was deeply disappointed. I really wanted this stuff to work and would have gladly ponied up some big bucks to keep using it if it had been effective.

What other changes did you notice?
Nothing, other than a couple of pimples.

Would you continue using this product? Why or why not?
No. It was completely ineffective. I saw no changes, not even moisturizing effects I would have gotten from a cheap lotion. It also left a somewhat tacky residue after use and I really disliked the light scent it had. However, these quibbles would not have kept me from using it if the product had performed as advertised.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
No! Save your money, sisters! I’m glad this trial is over and I can go back to my PY Neckline Slimmer.

—————————————————————————————————

HELENA LEMON, Provo, UT

Was this product easy to use?
Extremely easy. I just put a small amount on in the morning and night.

Did you notice any changes in your neck?
A slight improvement. My crepe-like skin can be dry and not supple. It was better after I used the product.

What other changes did you notice?
I didn’t have as much sagging in the area directly under my chin. It was just a slight improvement, nothing drastic. On a few occasions, I broke out on my neck. I believe it was because the cream is very heavy and blocked pores. I also noticed that the product would become dry and would flake off like dead skin–which was sometimes rather embarrassing.

Would you continue using this product? Why or why not?
Yes, I would continue to use this product because I saw enough of an improvement. Also, it lasted much longer than a month. I used it twice daily for a month and I still have over half the jar left.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
Yes. If you want to have a little bit more firmness in your neck area I would recommend it. If you want a more dramatic effect, go for a neck lift.

—————————————————————————————————

SUSAN NAVIDAD, Little Rock, AK

Was this product easy to use?
Very; It is smooth and easy to apply.

Did you notice any changes in your neck?
Skin is firmer, tighter, less saggy.

What other changes did you notice?
One time it seemed like the skin was exfoliating, but I’m not sure if it really was–there was no redness, only a seeming slough of skin cells.

Would you continue using this product? Why or why not?
Oh yes! I’ve continued to use the product. I love that the skin on my neck is more firm.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
Most definitely.

Dark Spot Erasers Reviews – Bremenn

—————————————————————————————————
Using a “concentrated cocktail of skin lighteners and pigmentation compounds,” Bremenn Research Labs Dark Spot Eraser “reduces the appearance of existing dark spots, but addresses the appearance of future dark spot emergence,” according to its manufacturers. Exceeded my expectations.

Would you use this product again?
Absolutely.

I used the product only for few weeks. After 3 days of use the dark spots started turning pink, in 5-6 days they started disappearing. Right now the spots on my face and hands are 90% gone. Loved it!

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
Yes, they were brief and quite understandable.

How quickly did you see results?
Results did not come quick, and barely perceptible.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
I was a bit disappointed in this product because the darkness of my brown spots was not reduced. However, no new spots surfaced!

Would you use this product again?
I would–I’d especially be interested to see if it would have better results if I used it for a longer period of time.

What could make this product better?
The addition of an exfoliant to use prior to the product.

Please describe your experience with this product.
I have been a sun-worshipper most of my life. I have tried numerous products [for my dark spots] with limited success and was looking forward to trying this. It felt good on my skin and smelled good too. Unfortunately, it just didn’t deliver on being the “Dark Spot Eraser” it was touted as.

BRENDA BRATLEY, Palmer, AK

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
Yes.

How quickly did you see results?
Within a week, if not sooner.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
The product met my expectations.

Would you use this product again?
Definitely, I would use it again when and if I get more dark spots.

What could make this product better?
Nothing, although the packaging looks very hokey and the model’s face full of brown dots looks very fake.

Please describe your experience with this product.
I used this product faithfully every day and noticed a difference almost immediately, but even more as the days went by. I only had a couple dark spots so I wasn’t sure this was even a product for me, but it did such a great job on those two that I know I’d use it again if I get more.

Would you use this product again?
Without trying it, I would not have bought it because of the cost. But, this is a wonderful product and I already bought another tube.

Please describe your experience with this product.
It did not discolor any other area. It is easy to blend in and it did not irritate my skin (I am sensitive to a lot of products.) My friends said what a positive difference it made and also purchased this item.
