When is the latest time I can plant vegetables? Can I plant veggies and flowers in the same flower bed?

    Hi Effie,
I can echo the good advice already offered and add some more interesting information. Sometimes planting flowers in the same bed can actually help the veggies. There is a thing called companion planting where the type of flower can be used to protect the veggie or attract insects that will protect the veggie. For instance, Anise, a great herb for bread and cakes with a pretty white flower repels cabbage worms and attracts parasite wasps to keep your veggies safe. Check out the Farmer’s Almanac for more tips on companion planting.

Here is a great website that shows by region when to plant different veggies…
Also you can plant flowers and veggies together so long as the sun, water and soil requirements are the same. I love to mix herbs, flowers and veggies together-that way tings look good at different times…

Effie — ok, a lot depends on where you live, that is, what USDA growing zone you are in. For example, I live in Zone 4, which means that in comparison to people who live in places like North Carolina, I have a shorter growing season and my first killer frost is something in the range of Sept. 30 to about October 15th. I can still put seeds in for things like lettuces 30-45 days before that, but I need to keep them well watered since August is generally hot and dry. For things like tomatoes, which are dependent on night time temperatures being warm in order to set fruit on the plants and have time to develop the fruit and get the fruit ripened, I have to have plants in the ground by June 1 and they have to be pretty big plants. For green beans, I can still put seeds in the ground the first week in July and still get green beans. But you need to find your zone and your date of fall frost, look at the packet, and count back from the fall frost date – and I always give myself a week to 10 days ahead of that too.
