Which side of my house is the best place to have a garden; — north, south, east, or west?

South or west are best although east can be good too if you get enough daylight. My vegetables grow great next to a brick wall on the west side of my house. Tomatoes and cucumbers especially like the heat of and protection of the wall and it also offers some support as the tomato cages, spirals and trellis’ become burdened with the fruit and veggies. Good luck with your new garden!

It depends on what you want to grow. As htwollin has said, vegetables need sun, so the south side would be best. Second best would be the west, as then your garden would get the warmer late day sun. If you’re talking about flowers, then it depends on what you want to grow. There are flowers suitable for every lighting situation. If you have a lot of shade, you’ll be more limited as to which flowering plants you can grow, but the shade gives a great opportunity to grow the absolutely gorgeous shade plants available, many of which have beautiful foliage. Great foliage plants for shade include hostas, toad lilies, coleus, Japanese forest grass, caladiums, lungwort, and others. (Perennials and annuals listed.)

I assume you are referring to a vegetable garden. Vegetables need at least 6 hours of sunlight as a rule of thumb, though things like greens do not need as much. So, the south side of your house where the area is not shaded by trees is the best.
