Well, one way is the Nike way: Just do it. Estimates vary widely on how long it takes to establish a habit, but one thing that’s needed is to start doing it and keep doing it for awhile until it feels essential to get through the day. Exercise is great for stress relief, btw, so if you’re going through a stressful time, maybe think about how much better you’ll feel. Variety can be important too, as is trying a lot of different things to see what works with you. Is the thought of going to the gym making you grab the remote? How about going for a bike ride instead? Or try rollerblading, dancing, hiking, Pilates, yoga–something you’ve thought about but never gotten around to. A lot of exercise studios offer either special introductory rates or even free classes to newbies, so check that out as well. Figure out, too, why it’s important to you to exercise. Yes, I want to look good, but I also want to take pressure off my knees and feet, so that’s my current motivator–being able to walk and stand more comfortably.
