With muscle activation a little goes a long way without having to go to the gym. If you are like most women, the fat accumulation is coming from a metabolic break point. What to do? You don’t have to diet your life away or hit the gym. Fat accumulates at the point of muscle inactivation and pronation. Think about it. How do you sit throughout the day? Slumped over a computer. Go ahead, sit how you normally sit and focus on your stomach. Do you feel like you are activating any muscles? Now… try activating your muscles. Sit at the edge of your chair and push your feet into the ground (toes forward/hip width apart). Push your shoulders back in alignment with your hips, lift your ribs, push your feet and tuck butt. How does your stomach feel now? Try it standing! Go to http://www.youtube.com/ttappercentral and click on Hoe Downs – Little Move BIG Results. Let me know how you do!

Eat a plant based diet and you can lose weight.. Eat Whole foods…go to Dr. John McDougall and read everything…get recipes there too. My clients lose whatever extra body fat they need to do by eating whole foods. Remove all animal products from your diet and eat no processed foods…like oils: olive or any veggie oil..all are 100% fat. Use dates in place of sugars to sweeten. Use whole foods. Exercise helps a little to make you slimmer but the foods you eat are key! Plant foods have a thermal burn as they have fiber. Animal foods have zero fiber and have lots of saturated fat, thus creating greater risk for obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, digestive issues..

shEnter answer here …Catherine, you’re going to have to take a 3 pronged approach. Your first focus should be what you put in your mouth. Getting lots of fruits and veggies & staying away from processed foods will go a long way to helping improve your diet. As far as exercise is concerned, you’ll want to lose fat while gaining muscle. I agree with Tannis in that you should find something that you enjoy doing…so you’ll keep doing it and it won’t feel like punishment. You will definitely need an aerobic component (walking, biking, hiking, kayaking, dancing…), but focusing on building muscle will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat – which means the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism and the more effectively you burn calories. So hit the weights, or if you decide to do Pilates or Yoga, make sure they have a strength building component to the routines.
The key is to make it fun. Try lots of things until you find something you can’t wait to do. If you’re looking for ideas, you may want to check out some of my Reviews. I’m sure you’ll find something you like there. http://bfitsandiego.com/bfit/blogs/shay-mckelvey-rn . Best of luck! Shay

Have you tried Pilates? I’m a Pilates instructor and see my clients firming and toning from their Pilates practice. The Pilates method places great emphasis on working the deep core muscles. Practicing these movements consistently strengthen the inner core muscles (transverse abdominus being one of these) and when they’re toned the tummy tightens from the inside out. That tones your waist, but doesn’t necessarily melt off excess weight. Add some cardio – swimming, fast walking, dancing, whatever you enjoy doing, to burn off the excess. If you’re seeking some home motivation, I do have a Pilates DVD available, WELL worked out with Tannis, and there are many sources in DVD format and online to help you stay with your program. Good luck! – Tannis
