A few weeks ago I interviewed a book published for FabOverFifty. She had great advice: http://faboverfifty.com/bookblog/2011/07/writing-so-you-wanna-be-published/

Angie – I think you are wise in taking your steps strategically and deliberately. There are three places to start in planning your direction. 1) Look for ALL free marketing resources possible. Social media is the target here. Money spent on a GREAT social media person who understands (and knows) the hot spots on social media for authors would be money well spent. 2) Find where you can get publicity and exposre to the audience that your book is written for. Write press releases/ads/articles that can appear in their publications or anywhere they (the book’s audinece) hangs out. 3) Start making calls to all the bookstores you can travel to and make book signing appearances. The more places you show up the better. Bookstores love book signings. Bonus) Search your audience for the most popular influencer and reach out to him/her asking for a time to talk and how he/she can help you get your message out. You’d be surprised how many famous people are willing to help the new person on the block.

As a published author, I believe the best results come from PR. Get yourself on TV, Radio and Print. You can hire a PR company that specializes in books plus you can do a lot by yourself. You can get free PR querys 3x’s a day from HARO – Help A Reporter Out, look it up on line and join.

I just attended a writing conference ~ Social media was a hot topic. Put together a social media strategy. Here are a few web sites for social networks
http://www.seededbuzz.com, http://www.amazon.com, and this is a website that will be up next month http://www.christianpublishinguniversity.com. It was a Christian publishing conference that I attended, but the information is applicable to all industries. Please find me on twitter if you need more. Stephanie, @ Red Lime Media.

It would be helpful to know a bit more about your book…fiction or non-fiction, self-help, how-to?

Depending upon the answer, I will be able to give you some suggestions.
