Can women in their 50’s wear skinny jeans or leggings? I’m 54, a little “apple” shaped, but have nice legs. What could I wear with it (tops, shirts, shoes)? It looks so comfortable, but I don’t want to look like I’m trying to look young!

First, look for a pair of legging with some real substance to them, none of those “second skin” types…Then, get yourself a nice pair of knee-high boots, a floaty tunic top and a long drapey sweater to wear over it. Go for a monochromatic theme and you’ll have one long line!

My husband and I went to a jazz concert over the weekend. I wore black leggings with riding boots, a simple crew neck top, red Chanel style Bouclé jacket with a silk black and white scarf, and rows of pearls. I received lot’s of compliments. I am 55.

I was told that you do not want to wear tight with tight, so a loose fitting top with some killer heels or boots.

Of course you can…I’m 61 and wear them. Tunics work as will a Tneck layered with a longer cardigan…and I will often wear flats with a lot of color with the leggings. I stay away from skinny jeans only because they look so great with heels which I have banished from day wear. It’s a lot about posture as well…So stride with pride.

I wear whatever I feel comfortable wearing! If you have nice legs; go for it! A tunic is nice. Just don’t wear a teeny tiny tight top with it (only those under 20 can do that!!!) and enjoy your feeling of comfort and wear what you love. You are the best judge of style. Not the public. Do what you enjoy, wear what makes you happy!

I agree with so many of the FOF’s! Don’t think of it as an age thing. If you have nice legs, flaunt your assets! Leggins and skinny jeans are so in fashion. Top them off with layers, a scarf, a blazer or cardigan to cover your waist area if it’s a concern to you. Elongate 😉 Boots, ballet flats or heels will top off your cool, sophisticated, hip style!

The look of wearing leggings with a high heel is so wrong on anyone of any age in my opinion. Also, if you remember wearing it the first time around (80’s) you have no business wearing it this time around. With that said, straight leg skinny jeans can be worn and look great with a flat shoe or boots. The look with high heels screams, what was she thinking.

Of course they can! In fact, leggings are a perfect fashion style for mature women (think about covering all those spidery veins!). I’m in my 60s and I wear leggings year-round. In the summer, I layer a breezy tunic over thin cotton leggings. In cooler weather, I wear above-the-knee skirts over heavier lycra leggings, topped off by flattering long cardigans, vests, or interesting jackets. If the weather turns messy, I pop on a pair of ankle boots; on sunny days, I accessorize with ballet flats. People (even my grown children) compliment me on looking modern, which is definitely not the same as trying too hard to appear young when you’re not. So, go for it!

Yes. I wear skinny jeans every day. My legs are in very good shape as I hike 3 miles a day. At 56 why would I want to look like an old lady? No thanks. I exercise hard, eat low carb, have long hair and wear makeup every day. You bet I am going to wear them!
If you need to cover your belly just wear longer tops.

I will be 70 my next birthday and I wear skinny jeans and all other kinds, too. Occasionally I wear tights. I make sure that I have the proper top…….a long one that comes down and covers. But I wear size 0 and 2 jeans and am still built like a teen ager so I can get away with it. Size would determine whether you should try it, I think.

I’m 61 and wear leggings and tunic tops (mid thigh and longer) all the time. I think it’s a great look even if you’re a bit on the “zaftig” side. It’s important to get a tunic that is longer than it’s width. Monochromatic dressing also elongated the body- don’t cut yourself up with different colors. I love the idea of heels with the look, but alas my age has caught up with my feet, so I try to wear cool looking flats.
    GO FOR IT!!

I wore leggings all through the 80’s and part of the 90’s and have been thinking about wearing them again but I am wondering……….are all of you talking about the same kind of leggings that we all wore then or is there a new kind that I don’t know about?

I’m in my 60’s and I wear them. It’s not about age – it’s about how you look in your clothes. I pair them with a long shirt and flats or heels depending on where I am going. I am curvy and petite.

I recently found a pair of slim knit jeans that are perfect. I actually ordered two more pairs yesterday. They’re flattering but don’t show EVERY bump. I can wear them with tunics, long T’s and I think that this winter I’ll be wearing them with sweaters. They’re stretchy and WONDERFUL! (Coldwater Creek, outlet!) I can wear mine with cowboy boots, sandals and even Keds. I tried a pair of jeggings last year and realized that they were just TOO tight for a 60 woman!!

Age doesn’t matter, proportion does. As many have said, “jeggings” look best with long tops.

LOL-what I meant was that jeggings are great on the right body…for ME, they’re just too tight…I much prefer skinny jeans that don’t show every little bump! I find them a bit more versatile too…if you look good in jeggings I say go for it!!

yes they can! I have several pairs of skinny jeans and leggings – they are so comfortable, and work best with longer tops. I’m not a heel wearer, so I just wear ballet flats or flip flops but they look great with heels. Try Diane Gilman’s brand of jeans, they are made for older shapes, and are fabulous!

If you’ve got the legs, go for it. I’m nearly six foot and have legs up to my earlobes. Even other women tell me my legs look great in jeans. Just avoid the skinny crop tops that the kids wear. I love tuxedo shirts or cashmere sweaters with mine.

I will be 60 in October. I am 5’5 and weigh 250. I have great legs and arms thank goodness. My weight is in my stomach. I wear leggings all the time and love them. I make sure to wear a long tunic type shirt or blouse with them to cover my bad area. I got comments quite often about how cute I look. I say wear what makes you feel good. Go to a store and just try things on and get what works for you. I don’t think at any age we should be showing our va-j-j so find a great top to go with your great leggins or skinny jeans. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!!!

ROTFL! It’s the 21st century! Wear what you wish! I’m 66 and wear skinny jeans. I’m also 4’11” and wear HIGH heels with them! I just make sure the heels are “casual” and not dressy. I love tunic tops but also wear button-down shirts for a more casual look. A really nice purse or tote and you’re good to go almost anywhere! Go for it!!!

Absolutely you can! I know that I look better when I pair skinny jeans, peggins, leggings, etc. with a longer top. If it covers the hips and reaches the tops of the thighs , I’m good. I intend to keep wearing them until my legs don’t look good and then I will stop.

Age is not the issue. If skinny jeans are too tight, they show all the imperfections & this can be unflattering. Ankle or high boots look great or a decorative flat shoe that is fashionable for fall ’11. The average sweater or blouse this season will cover the buttocks & this length will elongate the body in the best way. If your top is too short, this will show the “apple” shape in an obvious way.

By all means, djmagain! It’s all in the “how.” There are very flattering ways for you to wear this look. An “apple” shape with a slight tummy is quite well suited to skinny jeans and other slim bottoms – even leggings, if worn correctly.

First off, if your legs aren’t disproportionately thin in relation to your mid-section (you said “a little apple,” so I’m assuming a slight-to-moderate tummy, vs. a significant middle), play up your attractive legs. A pear shape may require the bottom-width of a flare to balance width of her hip and thigh area, but for you, simply employ strategies to minimize the tummy and celebrate your legs! Choose tops in structured fabrics, rather than those that will cling and hug the curves of your tummy. Keep jacket lengths just below the hip, and if your bust is large (common for many “apple” shapes), look for empire-waisted tops, or those with diagonal lines like this one http://bit.ly/wrap_top.

If your mid-section is more substantial, that doesn’t rule out the look entirely. Opt for a skinny pant, tucked into a high boot. The boot creates substance in the lower body so as not to appear out of proportion to your middle.

Because you are borderline petite, watch your vertical proportions to maintain a long, lean line. See more on that in this blog post: http://bit.ly/slimming_color. A special note: keep boots and shoes in the same hue as your pant or legging for visual length. (We petite’s will take it any way we can!)

Whatever figure-flattering choices you make, maintain your style with mature sensibility by wearing just one seasonal “trend” piece at a time. For instance, forgo the six-inch, stilettos so popular this season. Pair the skinny pant with other garments and accessories that have a timeless quality. Moderation demonstrates a strong personal sense of style!

I never understand the description of jeans as “comfortable”. They have seams and are on the heavy side and tend to look sloppy on most women. Leggings are definitely comfortable, but a lazy way of dressing. How much less comfortable is a loose dress with flats or boots, which is a look that can work on anyone and is much more sophisticated?

Oh my!!! That’s all i wear. My legs are great so why not show them off??? I love skinny jeans and leggings all year round. I wear them with all heights of boots, thigh high, booties, knee length……In the summer love them with a little pump and for comfort I always do ballet slippers. As far as your tops go. If you have a tummy, no worries….. cover it up with a fab oversized sweater, or a fuller top that does not hug the middle area. You can get away with murder in skinny jeans and tops.
Looking good is never too old….

Thanks so much for this reply…what perfect timing for me. I recently lost 65 pounds and my legs look great so I bought a pair of black skinny pants this weekend, but I’ve been chicken to wear them! I was afraid people would think I was trying to look too young. But I’m going to take your advice and wear them this weekend, then maybe I can “graduate” to work. Just need the confidence. Thanks again.

Leggings/skinny jeans can be tricky. Example: I would rather advise you to wear a pant with a flare at bottom for better balance, this is much better on an apple shape. I also think if you wore this look in the 80’s, this is not the look to go back too.
There are so many other options that will be more figure flattering. Cheers
