I will be visiting NYC for Thanksgiving and have 2 fashion questions.
1- Are bootcut, dark wash jeans OK with a nice sweater and boots for weekend wear. Obviously I will not wear them to the theatre.
2-How about a dark mink jacket? Is fur OK?

Whatever you wear, bring a sophisticated but warm scarf/wrap like a pashmina or paisley which can cover your head when needed and leather gloves and some sunglasses. NYC can be very windy and cold and you do a lot of walkiing everywhere.

Thanks Lisa, Yes, sunglasses are a must. They hide a multitude of sins (and wrinkles)

absolutely. I am in NEW YORK all the time.Your accessories are KEY. A gorgeous scarf wrapped around your neck (IT CAN BE TJ MAXX) but it is a signature piece. A great bag. A big sassy skin bag looks important (I always carry a Louis Vuitton)
Wonderful earrings. a big button is great or a big drop..no chandeliers:chunky. And a great sports watch with a great leather band. My credo: I buy the best handbags and best shoes…the rest of your clothes can be from Marshalls. It is how you put it together that counts in NY. The handbag will out you if it is not classy, classic. For the theatre: BLACK BLACK BLACK w pearls.
A dark mink jacket is great.

All the above are perfectly acceptable. Just if you go to dinner or the theatre dress up and yes New Yorkers wear fur! Enjoy your visit and please stop and see the 911 memorial.

It will be an interesting trip. The last time I was in NYC was 2 weeks post 911. This will be different experience. Thank you for the fashion advice.

Yes, boot cut dark wash jeans w/ sweater and boots are fine for weekends. You will feel comfortably dressed as you walk the streets of NY, great attire for the museums, movie or dinner at a lot of restaurants depending upon if a dress code is required. NYC is not as formal these days; it’s more about a fashion sensibility when it comes to dressing. I was at Lincoln Center & a gentleman was wearing jeans w/ a jacket but his wife was impeccably dressed. I do not necessarily agree w/ his attire but even men are more laid back these days.

Yes, fur is very chic again & you will not have an issue w/ PETA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) running up to you w/ red paint. Love the idea of a mink jacket instead of a coat. My friend just bought a mink cape.

This is a great time of year to be in NYC, & all the windows will have the holiday decorations, which is a fun activity on 5th Ave. & Madison.

Thank you for taking time to respond, Susan. I sure hope it doesn’t rain. Suppose I will take a rain coat too.

Yes , of course the jeans will be great.. Remember they have already had some snow so you must be prepared and jeans without tights underneath may not be warmer enough. the cold goes right through them….
As far as the fur goes….. yes yes yes…….the mink jacket goes with everything and when its cold out… there is nothing better than fur. There will be more people wearing fur than not in NYC… NY is my home town and it sounds like you know exactly what you are doing. It is impossible to have a bad time in ny… unless you are not prepared for the weather. Tights, beanies, gloves and scarf!!!!! MInk Mink
    Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the input. I just like to be careful about people’s sensitivities around fur. I will bring layers. I got a cute cloche hat so I think I am set.

Nowadays you can wear jeans or anything you want to the theater. I went to carnage hall last winter in a beautiful dress and full length fur coat. Guess what…I felt totally over dressed. It has become a very informal affair. Not at all like it used to be. Then again I guess it depends on the circles you socialize in. Mink is always In…in my book. “Others” say no to fur, but I personally LOVE IT. Wear what you want and what you will be most comfortable in. Sounds like you have good taste to me.

I am from the west coast and we dress much differently here. We are very casual. So I appreciate the input. Thank you very much.

I agree with Susan that what you consider is fine. And yes- the theater is “come as you wish” nowadays–but it’s refreshing to see some dressy effort put into the occasion. Furs are also fashionable from bag and shoe details to the coats that eventually come out to befit the weather (depending on your views- for some faux fur is a better alternative–Kate Spade has a great copy of Audrey Hepburn’s caplet).

That is helpful, Sherrie. I will take a leather pencil skirt for a dressier look and a pair of knit pants from Talbots that are almost like leggings. I hope it snows, that would be dreamy.

I’m glad to hear you won’t be wearing them to the theatre, as too many people do and I never understand why a skirt or nice slacks can’t be as comfortable and look so much nicer! That said, your dark jeans sound just fine for casual wear, as does a dark mink jacket, as long as the weather warrants it. Fur accessories have been seen for a while now and with the temperature drop of the last couple of days, the jackets and coats will be coming out, too. Enjoy your visit…

Thanks Susan, I try to be respectful on the whole fur issue. Actually I think the mink and jeans with sunglasses, boots etc. will be a good weekend look.
