Many of my clients use Retin a, it is great for helping reduce fine lines and wrinkles in skin over forty. However, because it contains Tretonin, an acid form of Vitamin A, it can also cause dryness and irratation of the skin.
My suggestion would be to use it sparingly every other night, with a good night time moisturizer in between to help restore moisture to dry skin. Choose a heavier, oil-based moisturizer that contains ingredients such as antioxidants, grape seed oil or dimethicone to help keep your skin hydrated.
In the morning when you wake up, wash your face thoroughly with a gentle facial cleanser and use a water base moisturizer with a spf, no matter what time of year it is.
I also recommend using the same brand of day and night time moisturizers to help keep your skin balanced. There are a lot of great brands out there, and it just depends on your price point.
I am a big fan of Olay Pro X line, moderately priced, or Skin Ceuticals if you have a bit more to spend.
Drinking lots of water during the day also helps moisturize your skin.
Sorry my answer is so long, I think our skin and care of it is worth the time!
BTW I love 63 years young!

If you are looking for an anti-aging day cream, I would recommend AVON Anew Platinum Day Cream with SPF 25. It is recommended for people over age 60. They also have a night cream in the Anew Platinum which will not dry out your skin the way the RetinA is. ($38 each or both for $54 or mini travel sizes on sale now for $9.99ea.)
If you are looking for a day cream without sunscreen (when staying indoors), I would recommend Anew Rejuvenate Flash Facial (what I use) or Anew Clinical ThermaFirm Face Lifting Cream.
If you are budget conscious (which aren’t we all), Avon has Solutions Total Radiance day/night creams for normal skin (buy one for $13 and get one for $1.99) and Solutions Ageless Results day/night creams for aging skin (buy one for $15 and get one for $1.99).
Hope this answers your question.

Hi Mimibama,
First regarding the Retin A, you may want to have your Dr. write your prescription for Renova, which is Retin A in a more moisturizing base specifically for mature skin, rather that straight Tretinoin/ Retin A which is used to treat acne.
Secondly, do make sure you are using the product correctly, as incorrect use is responsible for the majority of drying effects it can have on the skin. That means using no more than the size of a small pea for your entire face. Using too much can cause dryness and irritation. Squeeze out your little pea size, lightly rub your fingers together and tap them all over your face and blend on a COMPLETELY dry face. This last part is what causes most problems for Retin A/Renova users. You must wait about 20 min. after cleansing before applying it because even if you dry your face after cleansing, there is still quite a bit of water asorption in the upper layers of your skin and Retin A/Renova plus water is, counter-intuitively, another big cause of the drying effects. Also, as other posters have recommended here, you may want to cut back your usage to a few times a week.
As for you day cream, there are so many products on the market, but if you are using a Tretinoin product, you MUST use sunscreen daily otherwise you are going to undo any benefits you’re getting from it. Also, more mature skin should be looking for products with peptides, as they are at the forefront ingredient-wise in the war on aging.
I personally have gotten fantastic results with KaplanMD Day Cream spf 15. It’s pricey at around $125., but his products are concentrated so you don’t need to use a lot. They address hormone loss in older skin and really work.
Another option I like is Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery spf 30, which runs about $62.00. Dermalogica is a great, basic, Dr. researched skincare line that has also always served me well.

I want to second Jennifer’s question about using Retin A. It will exacerbate dryness and the constant deep exfoliation will make your skin thinner. I would urge you to think about weaning yourself off Retin A. As I get asked this question frequently, I have written an article with some suggestions for alternatives for dry skin: http://truthinaging.com/face/retinol-alternatives-for-recovering-skin

Lately I have been using L’Oreal Age Perfect Day.
It was highly recommended, and I agree with the recommendation. It is wonderful, does not feel heavy or greasy.
If I am going out for the day, I use Smash FaceBox instead as my make up primer.
I also use Avon’s Skin So Soft age defying renew and refresh neck and chest treatment whenever that area looks a little dry.
I know you will agree, both of these products do make a difference, without deleting your pocketbook.

There are many, many moisturizers available, as you know. You need to decide how much moisture you need, if you want it to do any thing else (firm or reduce wrinkles, for example) and what you’d like to invest in a product. Any daytime moisturizer you select should have an SPF. Avon makes several good ones. I like Anew Reversalist with SPF 25. It softens fine lines and fights the look of fatigue throughout the day. I am a little dry, and this product is not heavy or greasy. You might like Anew Ultimate if you need more hydration. It also has an SPF of 25. The Reversalist moisturizer is $32.00 for 1.7 ounces and Ultimate runs $34.00 for the same size. These are the regular prices; there is frequently some sort of sale or bonus product deal.

Well, I have a lot to say about that.
Please write to me at in**@***************ph.com and I will forward you some very good information. BOOMSILK is the moisturizer I am introducing Nov. 25 this year. Working as a professional make up artist for over 27 years, I have learned the skin on our bodies is the same from the top of our head to the tip of our toes. To protect, nourish, and moisturize your whole body, all you need is one product, as long as it’s safe and does the job. If you go to my website http://www.boombycindyjoseph.com you will find lots of information on Boomstick Glo
which is the same moisturizer in a stick. Best, Cindy Joseph

I’ve used everything from Shiseido to La Prairie and my FAVORITE is a very INEXPENSIVE product. Eucerin is my hands down favorite as they provide SPF30 in their Everyday Protection line of FACIAL moisturizers. If your skin tends to be a bit more sensitive they also have a Q10 anti-wrinkle sensitive line of creams & lotions.

Are you using the retinA for any particular reason or condition? It causes extreme dryness while accomplishing its effect and is it recommended on a nightly basis? I would definitely use a moisturizer for the daytime and love the natural properties of Tata Harper Skincare, their Rebuilding Moisturizer. They also have a serum, nutrients and more. I am using their full line and have found my skin brighter and more firm, especially that under the jaw bone area. And then you might try using the retinA every other night because we are all prone to dryness in the winter. Use a moisturizer the other nights and try Tata’s Moisturizing Mask, its so soothing.

It really depends on what you want to see in your skin. If you’re just looking to moisturize, there are many great products at different prices that will fit the bill. If you’re looking to moisturize AND help correct aging issues you might have, then Avon’s Platinum AM cream is my recommendation. It’s what I use and I love it.
It moisturizes really well, and helps fight the lines and wrinkles we all get as we get older. This product is geared towards the 60 group so it’d be perfect for you!!
Good luck! Chris
