Are leggings and a tasteful tunic type sweater appropriate for a holiday casual party?

Hi. Leggings, a tasteful tunic and casual party all SEEM to go together… but context is the real issue. And more importantly how these items make you look and feel. It also depends on the look you are going for. If you think you would feel comfortable and appropriately dressed for you size, age and the event, then I would say probably it would be fine. But check everything out in front of a mirror and consider who is going to be at this “casual Holiday party”. It is not an outfit I would recommend you wear to an office party however.

smitml – I hope this helps and thank you for asking.

Try sitting down with this outfit on, you should be able to answer your own question. I’m not a big fan of this look for older women. You’ve got to have fabulous long legs to pull this off.

I love leggings with tunics! Being comfortable comes easily when pairing up these two items, and this look can carry you through a lot of different wardrobe situations. I especially love this outfit choice for travel -you never arrive wrinkled!

I think it’s an appropriate look (no matter your size!), as long as it’s balanced and you choose leggings and tunics that are a fit for YOUR body (my favorite legging is by Flexee’s, http://bit.ly/rSU9BD. The links below feature cropped pants and skinny jeans, with a variety of tops. Leggings would go great with any of the tops and/or sweaters featured.

Yes, when you use the word “casual.” To get into the holiday spirit, black leggings with some type of detail on them such as a middle seam, or panel insert, even 2- tone can be more festive rather than blue denim leggings.

Another option is colored denim this season. The color can be vibrant in green, yellow, orange, and burgundy and will work equally well w/ a tunic sweater. These slim jeans can be a good substitution for the legging and still feel casual in a party setting.

    Happy Holidays!!

You know what looks good on you, the leggings and tunic are in style now, so if it works for you, go for it! I personally hate tights, or anything tight but love leggings or my black “jeggings”. I think kitten heals are hideous, flats are ugly, and boots rock everything! But we all have our own style, wear what you love.

They are, assuming that you assemble your outfit with adult sensibility. Choose a sweater with tasteful embellishment (no over-the-top bling) that comes to mid thigh (lower if the point where your own thigh begins to narrow is below true “middle”). Pair the sweater with a ponte knit legging and a full-length boot like a riding boot. The ponte knit is more substantial than a tights-like legging and it provides a smooth, finished look without a teenybopper feel. And if you’re not slim from head-to-toe, opt for a sweater, legging, and boot all in the same color value to create a long, slimming, continuous visual line. (In other words, avoid the high-contrast mix of a white top and black bottom that will visually split your body into parts making you APPEAR wider!)

Though the tunic in this photo is on the short side, this is otherwise a great example of party-proper garments! http://bit.ly/tunic_legging

Hi I agree with Susan, I am not really a big fan of leggings. How about a nice dress or top and skirt? Slacks are good too if you prefer pants.

Yes, depending on what kind of leggings and what kind of top….if the top is past the thigh, use a great belt to hike it up. aslo i love having a longer piece under a shorter sweater…..Please be sure that the legging are not see through and there is no panty line… That is the worst……As far as your feet with this outfit…. kitten heel pump or boot depending on the shape of your leg. Have fun, you will be comfy.

I have a few caveats for this popular look. The leggings look are best on someone slim with sim legs. I like it when the sweater comes to the mid thigh (at least!) and the look includes a great pair of high/or over-the-knee boots, flat boots.

I don’t care for that look for any occasion. It always appears to me that there’s a lack of balance in this look and the person wearing it is missing part of her outfit. Why not wear slim slacks with the tunic rather than leggings for a much more polished look?
