A subscription to National Geographic Traveler would be a perfect gift for someone interested in food, travel and adventure. http://travel.nationalgeographic.com/travel/traveler-magazine/
Also, TravelSmith has some great clothing and accessories for travel.

The Lonely Planet Travel Guides are great for information on specific areas – both domestic and international.

You might consider giving a membership to AndrewHarper.com. It’s not inexpensive but provides amazing information on interesting, off-the-beaten path travel adventures.

For people who love food AND travel (who doesn’t?), give them an adopted olive tree from Nudo, in Italy. They can choose from dozens of olive groves, pick the type of tree they’d prefer and then reap the rewards all year long – Nudo sends olive oil from their tree to their doorstep. Go to nudo.com.

I second all the other ideas here. Also, if there will be a long plane flight, perhaps cozy socks, a travel blanket or pillow, rich face cream (pressurized cabins are extremely drying), a book (depending on their tastes), a spare bag that folds up very small (don’t we always bring home more than we take with us?)…
For the really adventurous, a nice travel first aid kit might be in order.
One of the nicest gifts I received on a trip to Morocco was an e-mail of the La Marseillais scene from Casablanca….it arrived in my inbox the first morning I awoke in that city. I was blown away by the thoughtfulness of the friend.
Another gift you can give them is to NOT ask them to shop for you while they are out of town! (Sorry – that’s a pet peeve of mine)
A travel journal is also a thoughtful gift…I recently ran across my journal from a trip to Japan I took 27 years ago….surprising how much I had forgotten. Nice to have the record.
If they are visiting another culture, a good book on the norms and customs of the country would be helpful. Or, a book scanning the history of the place, such as Alaska by James Michener or The World of Venice by Jan Morris. On Amazon you will find books of short writings on different destinations, such as the Silent Traveller series by Chiang Yee. If they are going to a destination where it is customary to bring gifts (Asia, for example), you may want to give them a small cache of items from their home town – key chains, t-shirts, etc.
Hope that helps….please let me know if you need more specific advice.

I love Stonewall Kitchen – great website! some products you can find in high end supermarkets but the website is the best. I am a big fan of getting living social and groupon gift cards for people..they can use them for whatever the deals are on food, travel, adventure, culture and pampering.

If you are looking for a gift to give to someone who is going on a trip, I love to give them a cookbook of foods for the area they are going. It is always fun to see what foods are local to their destination and how the are made.

Wow…Food gifts…there are the standard sites, Dean & DeLuca and Zingermans which always have great things. Budget does play a part in all of this. French Macarons are all the rage right now and I know that D&D has these…I like giving something offbeat like Wild Fennel Pollen or Saba, perhaps white balsamic…something that people don’t find in the grocery…For travel and adventure…again a pretty wide open subject, look and see if Travel Smith might have some items that fit you need. Sorry I can’t really be more specific…

Some of the really esoteric cookbooks, designed almost like art books that you would never buy for yourself, might make good gifts. The chef of the French Laundry, Thomas Keller, wrote a wonderful book, with fabulous photographs of dishes. Also, Martha Stewart just came out with her book on entertaining, a follow up to her first entertaining book in 1982. Jacques Torres is known for his chocolates, and he has a website where you can buy them. Hope that helps.

I don’t usually write about products for traveling, but this one impressed me and I plan to try it out on my next trip to South America.

I was just in Seattle Washington and did a food tour of their famous Pike’s Market. I suggest getting a gift certificate to a food tour to the city they plan on visiting.

Two of my personal favorite things for travel are a $1 cotton bandana. I have a list of 101 things to do with one. And another travel stocking stuffer could be antibacterial hand cleaner (Purell) or a Evian Mineral Spray Water. Wonderfully refreshing!

Well, since I’m a librarian, books are my first answer! Of course now that could be an EBook if the recipient has a Nook or Kindle. And speaking of Nook or Kindle, they make fabulous gifts for those that travel! Cook Books and Travel Books are great gifts. Foods and goodies from your state or area are always a special treat. I know my friends and family love getting our wonderful peanuts and delicious county ham or local wine as gifts.

I live in Louisiana where I believe there is the best food, travel and adventure in the country. To give the food a try without leaving home, I suggest Cajungrocer.com. If you decide to travel here for unique shopping, relaxation, beautiful antebellum homes and gardens try St Francisville. Then, there is always New Orleans, awesome shopping, fantastic food and the casino if you are feeling lucky. I hope this helps. Happy holidays.

Well, for the best “food” gift of course there are cookbooks galore so if your friend has a fave go for that one. Also cooking classes are the real deal now, so fun and you get to enjoy your treats. Travel and adventure again…books are an easy choice, but there are also so many fun gidgets and gadgets out there, like really cool luggage tags, carry all cases that hang, fold-up and fit easily in a suitcase. Adventure, depends are your giftee’s preferred event is…but some neat item that works for fishing, hiking, might be just the ticket.

    Hi McKenna,
I always like to pick up something typical of the place I am visiting, a food item that is only available there, or an artisan made item from the region. If you would like anything more specific regarding Tuscany and Northern Italy let me know!

For a travel related gift consider a portable luggage scale. One that is lightweight and can be used before you leave and when packing to return. Heys makes a very nice microScale that I frequently gift to my clients. For food look for locally made artisanal chocolates.

One of the best websites for fun adventures of all kinds is: http://www.xperiencedays.com/. I received two of these as gifts – love the variety and quality for travel or adventure. The BEST travel company I’ve ever used is Abercrombie & Kent – I will take any of their trips! For food gifts, I love the Dean & Deluca catalog for their unique products. If you find out what kind of food or a favorite restaurant your recipient likes, you can buy them a gift card.

My favorite gift to give is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift card tied to a great food product from Harry & Davids, a gift of chocolates from a fine candy store or for travel you can check with your local travel agent. If I know friends/family are traveling on a cruise or to another city, I can contact the cruise line / hotel and have a gift waiting for them when they check into their room. This is so appreciated when people are traveling to give them a welcome from home. Also, check out your local restaurants and gift a certificate for that restaurant. In our city there are so many wonderful restaurants and by gifting a certificate, I can support my local community.

I got to the Magellan store online or in my neighborhood and get laminated city maps to give to clients. For example, if the family if going to Italy I might send them maps for Florence and Venice. I also love the little plastic zip up packing packages they offer-they keep easy to lose items like underwear, socks, and small accessories separate and accessible!

Depending on likes…regional cook books or regional wine books make great gifts. Add some regional food or wine. Travel gadgets are good, depending on where they go.
