I teach DIY Upholstery and Sewing classes. Most of my students are young, hip, darling, skinny, you get the picture. I don’t want to look like I’m trying to dress like them, but I struggle with what the best “uniform” is for me. I want to look hip, artsy and age appropriate. Understated cool.

I totally get it. It’s really not about them. I have lot’s of young, hip students too and I wear what’s comfortable for me to work in. Sometimes they dig it sometimes they don’t. All that matters is that you get it.

Slim trousers with ankle boots or leggings tucked into high boots or a “riding boot” style is classic yet stylish. Sweaters and fine gauge knitwear has a warm, comfortable and shapely style when you pair with a pant rather than a classic shirt tucked into the pant. It looks more contemporary and approachable. In general during the winter, pants or slim trousers look more contemporary than a skirt. There are great casual dress options out there that pair well with high boots and would also be appropriate for class.

Check out Bloomingdale’s contemporary dress options and some are on sale: You can also narrow the search by putting in the sleeve length on the left side. http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/contemporary/apparel/dresses?id=8608

I was a designer for manyyears and stylist… i have always worn, a “uniform”,,,,,You are always in fashion in Black….. i have all variations of the same look. Some sort of legging, tunic sweaters and tops, or black jeans. Depending on the weather, thigh high boots, booties, balletslippers… I have made this my look and I can change it up with scarf, bangles, hoop earrings etc…….. You will always look put together and so easy to get dressed in the morning.

Thanks. I am going to purge my unwearables and get some outfits put together. I love black, but I’m always worried it drains all color out of my skin.

wear a brighter lipstick or somethng with peach tones. Black will not drain out your skin tone…. no matter how many things i have and colors etc… i always go back to basic black… its easy, looks great, never goes out of fashion, classic, great canvas for other accessories, etc etc…….. and you can do more things in the morning before work besides sitting and starring into your closet wondering what to wear,…..
