I teach DIY Upholstery and Sewing classes. Most of my students are young, hip, darling, skinny, you get the picture. I don’t want to look like I’m trying to dress like them, but I struggle with what the best “uniform” is for me. I want to look hip, artsy and age appropriate. Understated cool.

Gotcha. A tunic over a jegging with a riding boot is good start. Just make sure the tunic doesn’t make you look preggers. A good way to repurpose your wardrobe and get the perfect tunic is to take a dress you no longer wear and shorten it just enough to cover the girly parts. Your students will be impressed at your “green” style. Also, bright colored straight/skinny cords or jeans with a long fitted black turtleneck and a splash of animal print in a belt or pin is a cool look. Looks cute with short black bootie or ballerina flats. Black yoga pants worn with bright colored knit tops and fashion sneakers (sketchers for one) look cool. Go for it!

I think the best approach is to first figure out how much bending and crouching you have to do:). If it’s a lot, I’d go with leggings, ankle boots, and a tunic. Choose either color blocked shades, tone on tone, or monochromatic. Just make sure the color story looks intentional. If you don’t have to bend too much, replace leggings with a dark wash jean in whatever shape looks best on you. Never mind trends. Then the tunic can shorten up to be an untucked shirt. Add either jewelry or a scarf, depending on what you prefer. Get a good haircut, or learn how to put your hair up:). BTW, your hair looks great in the photo here. Done!

Thanks. Great advice. I would have to have loose tunics, Otherwise, I look big. I have broad shoulders. Wish you were here to help me. Hair is also always a dilemma. Gray peeks through about every 3 1/2 weeks. Yikes!

I have broad shoulders too. I find that a v-neck, and getting a tailor to take things in a bit at the waist, helps a lot. And I’m letting my hair go gray and long. Especially with the artsy sorts, helps a lot with street cred:).

Hi Shelly! Here is a little trick to combat those pesky grays. I find a couple of eye shadow colors that blend well with my blond hair and apply to grays with a big brush. The gray hair is porous to grab the color and I must say looks pretty darn good! Hope this helps 🙂
