Here’s a question for the Style experts. I can’t help it, I really like the look of UGGS, but I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard. Which style would be appropriate for a more “mature” woman?

I own lots of Koolaburras and Australian Luxe boots, no UGGS…yet, and I get lots of compliments all the time from a wide variety of folks. I just do me, that’s what I’m about. Whether I’m wearing effortless chic or sophisticated classic, I’m just doing me. I’m 58, and my closet boasts Armani to VS PINK (pink’s just for home btw) and Loeffler to Frye, it’s about what I like, not the stylists, bloggers or the latest trends. While I’m still able to carry it off and I’m happy with me, I’m going to wear it. It’s not about impressing anyone, because that’s just way to hard to care about what others think. I’m comfortable with the skin I’m in. And you look great enough that any UGGS you put on will not be an issue for you whatsoever.

      Hi JustD,
Here’s how I see it. Sometimes women like me are paying more attention to other things, like in my case, furniture, interiors, how things are made. In my work, when I meet someone who is trying to turn her 1950’s Modern house into a traditional looking house, I want to tell her that they should move. It’s not the right architecture for their tastes. If she was fully aware and educated, she may have chosen a house that better suited their style. Apply that to women who haven’t paid attention to fashion as they have gone into the FOF years. We’re so busy doing what we do, we aren’t keeping up on basic know how as to how to flatter our particular bodies, build and coloring. Just to buy what’s out there isn’t enough anymore. We need to put some more thought into the cut, fabric, style, etc. Additionally, sometimes we just don’t see ourselves as others see us. I am willing to defer to a style expert who gets me, my work, what I feel comfortable in, and so on. One look does not fit all. I have already put this into practice in the last week after reading FOF stylist Sherrie Mathieson’s two books. I saw through photos, that there were some basic principles that, in fact, will make me look more hip than what I was trying to put together. I like myself, and I’m comfortable in my own skin, I just don’t think I’m interested enough in clothes to know what to buy and wear. It’s just like people turning their decorating over to interior designers because they know their own limitations and they appreciate a well designed space. I envy women like you who are obviously very in touch with style and brands and can put them together well. I just need help doing it. I’d rather find out about a new tool Dremel is selling and what you can do with it. I know, pretty pathetic. Always wanting to be cool and chic though!

Skip them…they simply are not flattering, even though they are warm. It is much more chic to wear a nice leather boot and go with warm socks.

LOL! Then accessorize with really furry, warm soft electric socks. OR get those hand/feet warmer things you buy for skiing and put them in the toes of your boots! Who says you have to have a pair of clunky, overly expensive boots to be warm and comfortable? BTW – I have heard from lots of guys that they really think UGGS are really unattractive.

I live in Northern Minnesota where Uggs (or my preferred Muklusk– http://www.stegermukluks.com for the hands-down warmest) are the fashion norm. I got a pair of heeled/clog styled Uggs boots called the Lynnea and really like them…except for the $200 pricetag. Honestly, they’re more fashionable than the standard Uggs, but slippery on ice. I love my mukluks more and have multiple pairs. I even wear them in the summer!

my strong beliefs are very simple, i wear what i feel is age approitate for me being 57, on the Ugg’s, myself personally they are not my style of boot, and thats fine, thats what makes us all individuals wear what is comfortable for you, to me they all have a basic style, from your photo you look like you do not need any help in the wardrobe dept. you are a very beautiful woman and your taste shines through, i love to feel young at heart, and my daughter will tell me, “Mom, if you feel good in it, wear it, cause i have a hottie mommie” GEEEZ!!! takning a page from my daughter, wear what makes you feel good, looking at your photo, i am sure you are recieving alot of compliments even ones when people walk by you, i just show my daughter your photo, her words were, “WOW, tell her she is very beautiful and Ugg it up, her response was a basic color you can interchange with different clothes”

OK, everybody, I got a pair of tall leather black boots that are 100% comfortable. I almost got talked into a tall pair of yummy gray leather Coach boots, but I knew I’d get more use out of the black ones (comfort factor) and my daughter gave me a pair of tall gray suede boots with a low heel last Christmas. Thanks for all the help and advice. Now I need all of your phone numbers so I can call you from the mall. 😉

You should have a pair of Uggs…all the negative feeling towards Uggs seem so ageist and back to ” leave it to June Cleaver days “. When we are fifty or over..does that mean we can not have friends that are younger as well….this subject and many comments seem absurd to me.

I think Ugg boots for FOF is fine. I live in CA, maybe our rules are a little more lenient here. To me, it’s all in the occasion and how you style them. If you wear them to make an errand to the post office or grocery store, I could see Uggs combined with skinny jeans (darker wash), and a shorter coat or parka. (Would look weird with a long coat.) I feel taller boots are more flattering than mid-calf, it has nothing to do with age, it’s that tall boots end at a slimmer part of the leg than mid-calf. If you’re not wearing sequins and a hoodie with Uggs, I feel they are entirely appropriate for FOFs, given it’s a casual occasion. I don’t wear them because I need more support, but I have often thought of having them as a quasi-slipper (I wear Dansko clogs for that now).

Wear what you love and love what you wear! I’ve read that “mature” women shouldn’t wear ankle boots, I bought two pair this year and love them. I prefer more support than Uggs provide so I went with a Dansko short boot. Too cute! Also got Born Tembi that I wore Christmas Day with a knit floral dress, tights and socks that barely went above the top. Warm, comfy, and looked good!

I do own a pair of black Uggs. I wear them when it rains or if I am up in snow country. They do keep your feet very warm. There are a lot of different styles of Uggs on the market, and some are very stylish. They are leather with the sheep skin lining that we love. I do not think you are trying too hard, it all depend on what you wear them with.

Honestly, they are truly divine and I think a great substitute for the look you are going for. They are a showstopper, and everyone will want to know where you got them. I hope the link works, but if it dosen’t they are the Jennifer Lopez Platform wedge midcalf boots at Kohls. On sale too! You can’t tell much by looking at the picture but trust me they are amazing on! Oh, and I’m 53 and don’t think they look too young. Because of the height they just look sexy and chic, but they are very comfortable. Hope you try them!

I don’t think shoes or clothes should be aged. If you like a certain boot, and it fits well with your wardrobe choices, and it’s comfortable, then go fo it! My kids tell me often a certain pump is for old ladies, but I actually feel feisty when I wear it. Go figure. Trust your own instincts.

The tall UGGS are really great for FOF but, IMO, the shorter ones scream you try too hard. Remembering that “less is more” and not throwing everything in your closet on too is the key. UGGS are for fun wearing, not for office wear or nights at post restaurants or nightspots. I wear Birkenstocks for sheer comfort and, frankly, being “on” for style all the time can really be boring and quite a chore. Look to FOF women in the public eye. They dress their age and still look wonderful. One fun accessory (UGGS) can go with classic style any day of the week. We FOF types live in a great time and we no longer have to worry about being a slave to fashion. Own what you love and wear it! It’s the 21st century!

I can definately understand why you would be attracted to UGGS, they are so warm and comfy and like you, I like how they look too! To stay with a more mature look, steer clear of the classic short and mid-calf styles, the taller styles will look more sophisticated and age appropriate. The classic in knee length or the Bailey would look great!

It’s okay to like what you life. You have to “own” it and be comfy or it will show on your face and in your walk. That being said, I like to balance the flat foot look of Uggs by wearing the taller ones like the Adironback tall, the Becloud or the plainer Greenfield. If you want a short boot, the Rommy and Caspia are both balanced by another element (fur and ties) to make the look more mature, but updated. Have fun!

I just finished the most fabulous big boxed and corded velvet reading cushion for the bed in my guest bedroom. I’m doing a makeover of that room for the weekly column I write in my local newspaper. I thought this project was kind of lame until I finished it and propped it up with some small rectangular purple velvet pillows and a retro black and white plaid. Wild and fun for the guest bedroom. I have never been able to understand what the appeal is in wearing UGG boots. Both of my nieces have owned UGG during high school and college days and now neither one of them would touch them.

They have added full-grain leather boot styles to their staple sheepskin styles but at $220- $350 sug. retail there is better and more stylish boots that will work with skirts, trousers, slim trousers and jeans. This is a boot year with many options, and now the majority is on sale.

Check out http://www.zappos.com/stuart-weitzman-boots~5?s=recentSales/desc/ and if Stuart Weitzman does not appeal to you then type in boots for other designer brands. Zappos has thousands to choose from.
