I fired my hairdresser. I also have very thin hair….he cut layers…& colored it lighter. I looked like a washed out brown with even thiner hair. I have finally let it grown out to one length and colored it a rich dark brown..my natural color. I have to back comb the top…but let the rest fall barely turned under …it looks thicker and I get many compliments.

Kat – I’ve lost nearly 3/4ths of my hair to thinning shafts and mine was very fine to begin with. Now I can see scalp if I don’t tease the top and front. Barbara Walters has this same problem (go figure, even with all her money) and she said once on television, to color your hair to match your scalp. In other words, if you can do it, go blonde or a pale shade that isn’t too far from your skin color. Then, if you can use some light gels or styling sprays, get it layered a bit and tease up the front and top to cover that ‘scalpy’ look. I have to use hairspray now to hold the style, but I’ve managed to keep it ‘looking’ somewhat full, even though it’s definitely not. Here in Arizona it’s just way too hot to wear wigs, but I suppose that’s the alternative – like the one you’re wearing in your photo. You might look for a stylist that specializes in hair care for medical patients, because they will be more familiar with these types of problems. Good luck with it, mine took some real ‘doing’.

Thank you Belinda. I went to a barber when I lived in Chicago, and he did the sides and back with a comb on the sheers and top kind of like mary suggested, minimal layers and very very short.

I guess it is mine since I paid for it (lol!), but I guess an expert would be a stylist who knows how to cut thin hair. Thanks Mimi

    Hi Kat,
I like your hair style now, but if you are looking for something new here is what I have experienced. A good friend of mine is a hair stylist to hollywood stars and I have often heard her say that fine hair needs a few layers to frame your face. Just make sure they are a very few so your hair doesn’t start to looking thin.
From there proper styling is important. Too use too much product because it will weigh down your hair.
Use products that are made for fine hair. Also try sulfate free prodcuts which are now available.
Let us know how it goes.
    Best, Mary
