I have an engineering degree and looking for an adventure in a new location. Any advice on choice locations for an up to date, technical 50 year old with a great husband, wonderful pets and a son in Los Angeles? We are looking for culture, good food and fun as we continue to work in our jobs.

OMG; do I have a trip(s) for you too. We have been going to Europe and traveling via riverboats (not barges) for the past two years and there’s nothing quite like it! I can’t even imagine taking another cruise and we’ve taken quite a few. The Directors are very well educated, entertaining, knowlegable and just plain fun to be with. Due to the small size of the boat, which includes a fabulous Chef and gourmet food, you actually form new friendships according to your interests. Can’t WAIT to do it again. Start out by looking at Vantage.

I went to the Vantage site and all I can say is WOW! We had hoped to some day go on a biking tour but neither one of us has enough stamina to go far enough to see we would want to see. It seems like a good way to see alot without having to constantly pack to a new destination.

Absolutely! If you wish add-ons at hotels, they are always available, and we feel at very fair prices. Tell them I sent you

Bike?! Did I hear “bike”?! We have taken two extended trips – one in Ireland where we rode the Ring of Beara and the other in Austria where we followed the River from Innsbruck to where it joins the Danube, then on to Vienna — jumping on and off of local milk trains as we felt — detouring for music in Salzburg and stopping for an opera ouside Vienna.
We didn’t travel with a group, just had a rough plan and suited ourselves — easily finding lodging each night with no reservations (except for the first and last nights, of course). Heaven. And we’re now convinced it’s the only way to really see.

In Ireland, all the folks in cars can’t see over the hedgerows. We stopped when we saw a gorgeous cow, a rainbow, a post office in the middle of nowhere with a bakery and French cafe tables outside in the wild fuchsia… Next trip? I’d like to continue from Vienna and follow the Danube to the sea…

Thanks so much for asking a question that invited sharing some of our best times!

Of course I’m biased, because I live here, but you should check out Austin, TX. It’s a great place for folks in the tech world (they call it Silicon Hills here, in contrast to the Silicon Valley of CA – we’ve got eBay, PayPal, National Instruments, Dell, Siemens etc. and doing well jobs-wise). Heck, we’re called the Live Music Capital of the World and boast SXSW, Austin Film Festival etc…without the drought we have lakes and creeks, lots of great places in nature, beautiful trips to the Hill Country which is close by…and as someone who used to live in the Bay Area I certainly think our restaurants are comparable.

    Take a look 🙂

    Hi Deb —
I really loved your question for you are looking “re-invent and re-plant” yourself in a new place. Not everyone loves CHANGE. Good for you! Well this may not be the best question for me to answer for I was born and have lived all my life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, I’m going to tell you PITTSBURGH is a great city. We have some of the major corporations headquarters here –Bayer Corporation, Pittsburgh Plate Glass, United States Steel, Heinz, Alcoa –in addition to great universities, culturual events and diversified environment. Check out Pittsburgh! Good luck in your venture…sounds exciting. Cathy

Thanks for the tip. I never would have thought of Pittsburgh and will do some research. We are so ready to downsize on the house and upsize on experience!
