Jeans. I’ve tried CJ Johnson, Not Your Daughters and Joe’s. Most of them don’t fit at my waist or at the tummy button. I am 145 lbs and 5, 5″. Suggestions?

I hear you!!! I’ve been through them all. The ONLY perfectly fitting jeans are the ones I’ve bought and had altered/tailored by an expert. Was definitely worth it.

Have you tried jeggings? There are a number of different brands that vary from high-waisted to low-waisted and from very thin fabric to almost identical to regular denim. The high level of spandex along with closer tailoring and lighter-weighted fabric make them very flexible, flattering and comfortable and addresses a number of problems such as a larger waist, or thicker or thinner legs.

Jeggings scare me even for pretty thin women over 50. While they’re comfortable, they do reveal all the lumps and contours.

If you try different brands on you should find at least one that is good for your body. I wear ones from Style, Inc. from Macy’s. I am 5’1″, weigh 118, and have a slim body but with a thick waist prone to muffin top and thin legs. Most pants are tight on the waist but baggy on the legs and make me look heavier than I am. My jeggings address both problems comfortably and attractively.

And I forgot to add that I wear ones that have heavier material which is almost the same weight as medium weight denim…so it doesn’t show my bulges!

I have tried these, Eileen Fisher and NYDJ, which came up too high on the waist but I like the look more than regular leggings.

I’d suggest you try Not Your Daughter’s Jeans again. They have more than one style, cut, rise, percentage of spandex, etc. I am thick around the waist and NYDJ fit me the best. Not every style of NYDJ fits me well, though, but the ones that do look absolutely fabulous!

I agree, they do often work for me, especially if I wear a long Yummy Tummy, and a top that is not too tight, with a jacket. I try to avoid the tunic, hide everything look. I am a size 10-12, I just carry my weight in my tummy and mid section!

I am a big fan of ralph lauren jeans. I buy them on sale at Macy’s. I wear black, khaki and blue jeans and they make a great fitting jean –

Bettemarie, there is a jean style, shape and fit out there for you. You may have to work a little harder to get exactly what you want in a pair of jeans. I would suggest two options, procuring a tailor to get the exact fit in a pair that fit in the hips, seat and length. Or have your jeans custom-made.

For instance if you found a pair of CJ’s, and they fit everywhere else except the waist, your tailor could possibly insert additional fabric in the waistband (elastic or taking a part of your hem and placing it in the waistband) so that you get the fit you need in that area.

If you don’t already have a tailor, ask for recommendations at your dry cleaner. They likely have a tailor on call working with them.

Custom-jeans can be costly, but they may be the best money, time and frustration saver. They can totally outweigh the option of consistently searching for jeans, not getting the best fit, etc. Think of custom-made jeans as a staple and an excellent investment in your wardrobe.

I have not worked with any of these companies yet, but there is information out there on Google about each one of them:

    http://www.makeyourownjeans.com/ has a gazillion options.

http://3×1.us/collections/womens the shapes listed on the site are just up my alley but may not be a great choice for a women who prefers straight legs or boot cuts-they don’t offer those options.

http://www.indicustom.com/womens has the best selection of all shapes, sizes, cuts and colors. The site is well-designed and easy to navigate.

Great idea! I have a good seamstress, dreassmaker and should ask her about this. She is truthful about what works, and won’t.

To my surprise old navy has a new line of jeans that are made to fit a variety of sizes and shapes. Maybe they have a pair that can work for you.

I believe there are jeans out there for you. You are medium height and seem to carry your weight in the mid section? Two of the 3 brands you tried should make sense given the measurements you give (but not Joe’s). I think it’s a matter of “keep trying”. Make sure they are simple (straight slim leg or bootcut), navy (dark), stretch and not low cut. Wear a top over your waistline so you avoid emphasis on your midsection or the need to tuck anything in which cuts the figure and takes up room.

Thank you, Sherrie, I am trying to get out of the habit of wearing leggings and tights and tunic tops ( so comfortable, though!). My sister is 5, 5 and a size 6, and wear Hue tights with everything, and layers on the top and she doesn’t need to! She is tiny, and looks great in jeans, she just doesn’t like how they feel around her waist.

There are SO many great alternatives to jeans. I would try Chico’s, Coldwater Creek, Talbots. Give something else casual a try, you might just give up jeans totally.

Yes, Splederosa, Coldwater Creek is another good source.
My additional criticism of jeans is that in many cases, they’re not even all that comfortable as seams can be rough and the traditional style can be binding when in a sitting position.

Susan, I HATE jeans on anyone out of college. It’s such a cop-out to getting dressed. One of my girlfriends, approaching 65, wears jeans with every imaginable thing she owns and never looks polished, sleek or well-dressed, and she thinks she’s fashionable. They don’t fit unless you have a perfect figure (she’s 5’0″ & a size 8-10). I think you answered perfectly, totally agree with your candor. Marsha

I totally disagree with you. Denim is ageless and an American classic! I say, just keep trying and trying until you find the ones that are flattering on you. If they fit right, they’ll flatter and you’ll feel confident and chic!

My suggestion: Don’t wear jeans! They’re not flattering on 90% of the women who wear them as they’re not forgiving of figure flaws and tend to look sloppy.
If you have a large waist, look for elastic waisted skirts or slacks or even jeans, as that style will have a looser fit all the way down. I believe that Chico’s carries them.

There is nothing worse than jeans that “squeeze” you in your midriff! Companies such as Eddie Bauer and Lands End offer all types of fits for all types of figures.
