I am 66. I breezed through menopause (didn’t really have any symptoms). Now at 66 I am having night sweats several times a week where I wake up and my nightclothes and sheets are drenched with sweat. Could it be a hormone imbalance? If so, what should I do?

Have you been to your cardiologist? Some studies suggest that night sweats after menopause may be heart related.

My nurse practitioner advised me to mix tofu with food to help alleviate night sweats. It really did help. My husband really notices the difference between when I use it and when I don’t. Something simple and good for you and it helps!

Many factors can contribute to night sweats/hot flashes after age 60. About 29% of 60-year-old women report persistent hot flashes.

In some cases, a night sweat/hot flash may have non-menopausal reasons. Sometimes certain medical conditions – such as hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), diabetes, tuberculosis, certain tumors, and serious infections – can cause hot flashes.

If you are concerned that your night sweats are not post menopause related, you should make an appointment with your healthcare provider.

Also, some drugs may contribute to night sweats/hot flashes. For example, nitrates, nicotinic acid and calcium-channel blockers.

If your night sweats are hormone related, there are both hormone and non-hormone treatments available from medical to alternative options.

Common hot flash triggers: stress, caffeine, alcohol, hot and spicy foods, hot tubs, showers and saunas, warm weather, and smoking.

You may wish to track possible triggers. Also, review current medications and visit your healthcare provider to discuss the cause of your hot flashes. Often lifestyle or medication changes can manage those hot flashes.

Recently I was under an enormous amount of stress and woke up nightly drenched with sweat. I freaked that my menopause had returned. I discussed this with my doctor, took a blood test (revealed no hormone imbalance or other medical conditions) and concluded it was stress related. Once I focused on relaxation (acupuncture, and scheduled pampering time – a vacation/ spa time) those night sweats disappeared.

Sending you cooler nights and sweet dreams.
