I have over the past several years asked my gynacologist and the PA about horomone testing. Everytime I do I get the same answer “hormones fluctuate so much that there really isn’t a good way to test them so we don’t recommend it”. What’s up with my doc? So many women get them tested.

I need to know what hormones you want to have tested and what you feel testing your hormones would give you an answer to. I am guessing you want to know something about your menopause? As a certified nurse-midwife who works with many mid-life and older women, I agree with your MD and PA. Testing your estrogen and progesterone levels will tell you what they were at that point in time, nothing else. What is more diagnostically helpful is your age, the date of your last period, the age that your mother or older sister experienced menopause and what your symptoms are. The average age of menopause (which is determined by 12 consecutive months without a period) is 51. However, many women are older or younger when menopause actually occurs. If your near this age, having irregular periods, hot flashes, interrupted sleep cycles, and other signs of menopause, then you’re normal. Testing your hormone levels, in my opinion, isn’t more valuable than taking a history from you and adds to the cost of health care for know particular reason. Patients often feel that more testing means better health care. This really always the case.

Find a new Dr., one that focuses on Women’s Health. I can tell you from experience that it make take a few visits to sort out one who knows what you are going through but it is totally worth it. Having successfully gotten to the point where I feel like I have escaped the wrath of perimenopause and Instant Menopause(hysterectomy), it’s just not about the lab test spit test bla bla bla…there are other things that will through you out of balance besides the “pauses” so you also need to evaluate your lifestyle. But if you find the right Dr. They will look at that as well as your female hormones. You need to look at your Thyroid panel as well. Stress is the major culprit in unbalanced hormones and I would look there first! I have dealt with that and have finally conquered it and I am only 51 and am not on any bio identicals( I was and it just made me fat) I am looking and feeling better than ever and have dropped the 20 lbs that the “pauses” put on me since 45. Again if you don’t like what your Gyno is telling you get another DR. Holistic preferably!

The best way to get a baseline and then monitor your sex and stress hormones is via saliva testing. Plus, I would also recommend blood testing a full thyroid panel. You can test yourself at the link below. Then, I would love to take you through my highly successful hormone balancing program, The Aevum System for Women in Transition (http://jessicadrummond.com/aevum_womenintransition/) For home testing: http://www.canaryclub.org/advancedplus-thyroid-adrenal-reproductive-test.html

Feel free to email me directly with any other questions: jessica@jessicadrummond.com. Best of luck to you!
