    Dear Carol,

Short and color for POP looks fantastic! If your hair is long/longer, try twists, coils, or knobs. Checkout Miss Jessie’s website for ideas & products. They’re great! I use & love them.

Shorter, layered styles give you lots of options for styling, including the use of pomades which you can use to create some spiky pieces. I’m 56 and after too many years of long hair which was dragging me down and getting frizzy and resistant to styling/curling (so I kept it clipped up most of the time anyway), I Googled images of “flattering short hair styles for older women”. I found a pic of Sharon Stone which a cute spiky cut with some length around the neckline in the back. I got some multi-dimension highlights and viola, wish I did it years ago. My hair is shiny and healthy and easy and fun to style. Personally I think that long, one-toned straight hair look is unflattering for older women as it tends to drag down our faces, which are already fighting the effects of gravity. Some volume up top draws the eye up away from the neck and flatters the jawline. My new cut was like an instant mini facelift.

The shorter, the better! Look at Jaime Lee Curtis! How about the gorgeous Helen Mirren! Your use of the word “kicky” says a lot about what a fun gal you are! Let your sunshine reflect in your fun hairstyle. I’d bet that you’ve gone through too many years of having to style your hair every single day. It’s past time for you to give up on that and go with something fun and short that will get you into & out of the shower in seconds and then out the door to do something you love. I often think of all those hours I spent on my hair when I was young. Now, I don’t even think about it! I am all into “wash & wear” and I’ve never been happier! Go for it!

My daughter told me…LOL…NO PIXIE! I also don’t have the face shape for a pixie to look flattering. Unfortunately, with a long face and naturally fine, heavy dense, straight hair…wash and wear drags my face down even more. Jamie and Helen may be able to pull it off, I’m not that LUCKY!

I think it all depends on your face shape at your age, your skin color, eye color, and what type of style clothes you wear. You are all “one package”.Layers make hair look dry over time, even with good trims.Shorter hair took 10 years off my face,I was shocked!I am growing it long again though and pulling it back.I find you can make some romantic looking up do’s that are also flattering. You also have more options.I am 54,my style is ecclectic,my face round, skin pale with blue eyes.Be true to yourself and forget the trends.I would like to attempt to let my hair grow out grey(i am a blonde)….maybe next year!

    Hi Carol:
Living where there is no shopping is a challenge for me but I have found Cabi trunk shows have great well fitting clothes that are always on trend. I find a color that makes me feel good is key. Mary:p

A shoulder all-over one length (with or without a side bang), grazing the collar bone gives the face a youthful frame without a lot of up keep expense. Longer cut allows you to clip it up if need be, or do a chingon or poney tail too. I find layers look like you just got out of bed and are still half asleep. Keep an eye on your color and don’t go too dark or too light. Consult a friend or stylist on what shade of your natural color looks best with your skin tone. You may even find your natural salt/pepper would enhance your face; be cheaper to keep, and be healthier for your locks!
