How do you know you hit, started menopause? All the women in my family have had hysterectomies so I have no way of knowing how the women in my family experience it.

It is defined as a physiologic absence (meaning no history of other causes like chemo or radiotherapy, ovarian or uterine surgeries) of menses for at least 1 year. However, 4-5 years before that some patients begin to undergo what is called menopause transition. During this time they experience some menstrual irregularities, night sweats, hot flashes or some mood irritability. That is actually the time to establish care with a good women’s health physician so that you can be educated and treated for any disruptive symptoms. One of the first symptoms you may notice during perimenopause is irregular periods.

In the United States, the average age for menopause is 51 for non-smokers and 50 for current and past smokers. By age 55, 95 percent of U.S. women will have reached menopause.

Still, if you want to see where you stand, ask your healthcare provider for a blood test to detect the amount of Follicle Stimulating Hormone or FSH. A rise in FSH is the first measurable sign that a woman is entering menopause.
