I love shoes, and have too many pairs in my closet. I have noticed heel heights getting taller in the past few years. Are these these norm, and acceptable for over 50 women? In the workplace for casual/dressy wear? I read recently that the 5 & 6 inch heels with platforms are now “out”.

Shoes are my weakness. I have every style, color heel heigth, thickness and texture that one can imagine. Maybe over 100 pair. Haven’t counted recently but like you I have many and I love them all, that’s why I bought them. It’s all about preference. High heeled platforms are still in. So are chunky heels and wedgies…go figure. I never thought they’d bring those back. My motto is…wear what feels good first, looks good second and makes YOU happy. I routinely clean out my closet and donate clothes, shoes and boots to the battered women’s shelter or goodwill. My first choice is to always help women in need. Doing so makes room for new goodies when I feel like shopping or need something new.

Yes, heel heights have been very high for the past five years. The good news is that this fall season, the heels are getting thicker & chunkier and this makes it much easier to walk in especially for support & balance. The wedge boot or shoe is the rage this fall season in various heights, majority ranging from 3 ¼” – 5 inches. Cole Haan & Stuart Weitzman have some lower heights at 1 ½”- 3 ½”.

The only women I know that wear 4-5 inch heels to the office consistently are women that are looking for height & presence. Women who are under 5’0 “ or slightly over tend to wear dresses and skirts for business, therefore a heel looks much more professional & polished giving the leg a longer length rather than a flat shoe that emphasizes the shorter height. This does not mean that you have to wear a heel this high, as a 3 -3 ½ inch heel will also give the same professional appearance. It just depends on your comfort level & the height that you can walk in without looking like your ankles are wobbling. It’s about style choice NOT age for heel heights.

They are definitely not “out”, possibly modified a bit from when they were first shown, but new models are very chic and of course more comfortable than high heels without platforms. I actually just bought a pair made by Clergerie, known for comfort, for the avant garde Japanese designer, Issey Miyake and they add a very chic element to any outfit with which they’re paired and work with any skirt length, leggings, capris, etc. As with any accessory, though, alot depends on your general style and if you’re a very conservative, preppy dresser, a very high heel will be inconsistent.
