About a year and a half ago, I stopped using permanent color on my 20% grey, below shoulder length hair, and substituted Clairol’s Beautiful rinse, which lasts about a month, gradually fading out. With a light blond shade it looked as if I had highlights in my medium brown hair. With regular trims, the dye is now pretty much gone. I’m once again a virgin.

Slowly lightening is a great idea. Lighten until you’re a light blonde and then cut it a la Jaime Lee Curtis. That’s what I did and I’m loving my “wash and wear” hair days. The very short gray hair is stunning and I am complimented all the time. Even my hairdresser loves it and he makes money from all those dye jobs! btw: When you’re finally gray, take the money you saved from those dyeing days and buy something fabulous for yourself! P.S. Don’t forget to match your eyebrows to your gray hair. Those dark brown eyebrows will look strange with your gorgeous gray. I ended up buying Maybelline gray eyebrow pencils from Amazon and I love them! (Maybelline doesn’t make these anymore and Amazon was the only place I found them. Cost a lot but worth it!)

Hello StyleGoesStrong47545, I hear this question all the time and I had to deal with it personally. When you decide to embrace your beautiful and regal grey hair, it is a process emotionally and chemically. I chose to big chop, but not everyone has the courage or desire to do that. I would suggest two other options. Option#1, ease into the change by using your natural color as a base and allowing the grey to emerge slowly with regular trims you will get there in approximately a year. Option#2, use a henna based product that slowly and gradually changes the color without the harsh damage of permanent of semi-permanent color. Good luck with your journey and remember beauty is realized in all shades.

Add in some light blond hilights along with your carmel. As your hair grows out you can lowlight your roots. Eventually you will have to bite the bullet and just let it grow out. Cutting it short is a quick solution to your problem. If your hair is long you can put it up. Headbands will hid the new growth in the front.
