{Poll} Is renewing your wedding vows a kiss of death?

Wedding vow renewals are a rising trend in Hollywood, according to wedding website TheKnot.com. “Perhaps the desire to reaffirm commitment is a healthy reaction to the changing state of marriage,” writes Anna Jane Grossman, a reporter for The New York Times. But she goes on to say, “it seems that restating vows is not a panacea for the evils of divorce, and may even bring into question the sturdiness of the original utterances.”

Read about these four celeb couples who have re-tied the knot, then decide: Is renewing your wedding vows a kiss of death?

Ramona and Mario Singer

“Real Housewife” Ramona Singer and hubby-of-nineteen- years Mario got a chance to say “I do” again at their December 2009 vow renewal ceremony at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.

According to The New York Times, Ramona wore “a custom-made white satin gown trimmed with crystals and ostrich feathers” and “told Mr. Singer that she loved him more now than the first time she married him.” “You know, it wasn’t done as a fluff thing,” Ramona later told a reporter from The New York Times. “When someone does something for real, you feel it. You feel the vibrations. You could feel the love between my husband and I.”

On an episode of “Housewives,” less than two years after the couple reaffirmed their love for each other, Ramona visited a fortune teller who told her Mario was not being faithful. On “Watch What Happens Live” Ramona denied it, saying, “I never take fortune tellers to heart. I know what I have.”

Kris and Bruce Jenner

Kris Jenner, “momager” of the infamous Kardashian clan from hit reality show, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” was married to hubby and Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner on April 21 of 1991. The couple celebrated their twentieth anniversary this past year with a family trip to Bora Bora and a renewal of their vows.

The romantic ceremony was filmed for their Bravo reality show and attended by the Kardashian kids (minus Khloe) and the Jenners’ two children, Kylie and Kendall. According to US Weekly, Kris shed tears during the intimate ceremony officiated by a Tahitian priest on a hilltop at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa.

Madonna and Guy Ritchie

In 2008, rumors surfaced that Madonna and hubby Guy Ritchie were on the fast track to divorce. In an effort to re-affirm their marriage, the couple re-tied the knot in a private Kabbalah ceremony in London.

“The ceremony lasted about an hour. They turned up at the Kabbalah centre in their gym clothes and changed into white robes. Everyone at the centre hopes that they will get through their recent rough patch,” according to the Daily Mail.

But, even after a wedding re-do, Madonna and Guy couldn’t “Keep It Together.” The couple split just two months later in October 2008 after seven and a half years of marriage.

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony said “I do,” three times in their seven-year marriage. The pair wed in 2004 and renewed their vows four years later while vacationing in Las Vegas. Two years after that, in 2008, they renewed their vows, yet again, at their estate in Hidden Hills, California.

“We realized the bets in Vegas [on whether we’d make it] stopped at five years, so we’re really looking forward to this one,”  Marc Anthony joked in US Weekly.

Unfortunately for this celeb couple, the third time wasn’t the charm. J-Lo and Marc Anthony divorced just over one year after vow renewal numero tres.

“Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” but didn’t anyone tell “Jenny from the Block” that all these expensive ceremonies do add up!?

Heidi Klum and Seal

Weddings are fun, so why not have one every year a la supermodel Heidi Klum and musician-hubby Seal. This celeb couple renews their wedding vows every year around their anniversary with different theme parties.

Past vow renewal celebrations have included a white trash ceremony, a retro-themed party and a “brides and grooms” night.  Coinciding with their six-year anniversary this year, the couple renewed their vows at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla., with a masquerade style theme, according to New York Magazine. Heidi dressed in a Victorian mask and Seal in a pirate headdress.

“It’s our time – a lovely family time,” she told Redbook. “It’s about remembering this moment of love we gave to each other and reinforcing it.”

{Poll} Would you take back this cheater?

Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby and Gene Simmons all cheated on their FOF wives. But, even after highly-publicized scandals, their wives took them back… would you?

Bill Cosby

“Through all the years of my marriage, my love for Camille, like my stomach, has steadily grown.” -Bill Cosby in his book Love and Marriage

“America’s favorite dad”–Yes. “America’s best husband?”–Not so much. In 1997, after a bizarre turn of events, Bill Cosby confessed he cheated on his wife of over forty years, Camille Hanks Cosby. Following the murder of Bill Cosby’s son Ennis, a woman named Autumn Jackson claimed Bill Cosby was her father and threatened to expose the comedian for cheating on his wife with her mother, Shawn Upshaw. Cosby admitted to a “rendezvous” with Autumn Jackson’s mother, but it was determined Autumn was not Cobsy’s daughter. Autumn later served jail time when she was accused of attempting to extort $40 million from Cosby. Sheesh. Give this guy a break? Or would you break up with this man who once referred to marriage as “a gift from the gods”?

Would you take Bill Cosby back?

Bill Clinton

“I did not have sex with that woman.” –Bill Clinton

Despite her husband’s multiple infidelities (Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Monica…), and a national impeachment hearing, Hillary Rodham Clinton stood by her husband. “A vast right-wing conspiracy,” she initially called the charges. But, when the evidence of his affair with Lewinsky became undeniable, she issued a statement “reaffirming her commitment to their marriage” but privately was reported to be furious at him. According to Carl Bernstein’s biography, A Woman in Charge, “Hillary wrote…’I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him, ‘What are you saying? Why did you lie to me?’ I was furious and getting more so by the second. He just stood there saying over and over again, ‘I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I was trying to protect you and Chelsea.'”

In the end, Hillary took Bill back. “I really had to dig down deep and think hard about what was right for me, what was right for my family. I never doubted Bill’s love for me ever… The momentary feelings — you know, you are mad, you are really upset, you are disappointed — all of that goes through your mind,” Hillary told Tyra Banks, according to Hollywood.com. “I have found you really shouldn’t make decisions in the heat of those moments.” But, did Hillary make the right decision?

Gene Simmons

All relationships are open. Don’t believe there’s any difference between a monogamous and a polygamous relationship. Those are all just big words, like ‘gymnasium.'” – Gene Simmons

Kiss bassist and vocalist Gene Simmons (nickname: “The Demon”) and FOF former Playboy Playmate girlfriend Shannon Tweed have been living in sin for… 28 years.  Gene and Shannon, who once described themselves as “happily unmarried,” even have two grown children and their own reality show, Family Jewels. This season, the show has “documented their troubles and family therapy sessions stemming from Simmons’s claim that he has slept with thousands of women,” according to People.com. Since Gene Simmons proposed to Shannon Tweed on the season finale in July, Shannon says their relationship has unraveled.  “I wish someone had let me know it was an open relationship. If I’d have known, I’d have been doing the same thing, but he didn’t let me in on the secret,” says Shannon in an interview with a PostMedia News reporter. It is still unclear if the two will ever tie the knot, but Tweed says Simmons has stopped cheating since she threatened to leave but still hasn’t admitted he’s done anything wrong. “He’s still lumping himself into groups, like, ‘We men, we’re not made that way,’” Shannon said. “Don’t say ‘we.’ I don’t want to hear about other men. I don’t care what other men do.”

{Poll} Bizarre Celeb Beauty Rituals: Would you try them?

*Sigh* the things FOFs do for beauty! And these 5 FOF celebs take it to a whole new level… Read about their bizarre beauty rituals, see what a dermatologist thinks, then vote: Would you try it?

Call it vinotherapy. Actually, that’s what top resorts in Spain, Portugal and France are already calling pricey beauty treatments where wine residue is rubbed into the skin. In The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets,  Kym Douglas and celebrity journalist Cindy Pearlman write that Teri Hatcher uses sediment from red wine to polish her skin in the tub. “I scoop them up and use them as an exfoliant,” says Teri. “The only bad thing is you can’t drink the whole bottle of wine.” According to the authors, polyphenols found in grapes get blood flowing.

Dr. Krant says: “Scrubbing and massaging get blood flowing on their own, so it’s not clear if she is getting the benefit she expects from the red wine itself. Proanthocyanidins from red grapes have been shown to have real health benefits from their antioxidant properties when ingested, but the anti-aging effect from topical use has much less scientific evidence behind it.”

Milk does a body good…but what about a face?  Cindy Crawford thinks so. The Daily Record reports that the almost-FOF supermodel mixes milk and water and sprays in on her face to keep her skin hydrated. Milk baths have apparently been around for centuries; historical beauties including Cleopatra and Elizabeth I of England indulged in the lactic luxury. Everybody’s mooin..er..doin’ it.

Dr. Krant says: “Milk contains lactic acid which does contain some exfoliative and skin-softening properties. Milk fats also help moisturize and keep skin supple.”

Ever wonder how some celebs get that “baby-faced” complexion? Just ask FOF diva Madonna, who reportedly uses a face cream made with human placenta. The product is called EMK Placental, and according to BeautyUndercover.com, Madonna and a slew of other A-listers are using it. Placenta “helps oxygenate your skin…improve natural cellular renewal and… protects your skin from the assault of environmental stress, UV radiation…and the natural aging process,” according to the EMK Placental product website.

Dr. Krant says: “Placenta contains many growth factors and vitamins. It has been studied for wounds, but there has been little to no scientific proof of its affect on intact, healthy human skin.”

Almost-FOF actress Sandra Bullock has become the butt of tabloid jokes for her bizarre beauty ritual. Glamour UK reports that Sandra uses hemorrhoid cream under her eyes to reduce puffiness. “I didn’t realise that putting hemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business,” says Sandra. “But apparently, butt cream helps lines around the eyes!” Sandra says it’s true….so, no butts about it.

Dr. Krant says: Preparation H from the 1950’s did contain an ingredient, Bio-Dyne (R), that helped de-puff, but that ingredient has been removed from the modern version of the cream–in the United States. Bio-Dyne does still come in the Canadian preparation. So it’s not just any hemorrhoid cream that can do the trick. Makes you wonder which one Sandra is using….

Debra Messing doesn’t throw a hissy fit about her eye wrinkles… No, she just uses snake venom to smooth them out. That’s right, this almost-FOF actress uses an eye cream which contains snake’s venom as an active ingredient, according to The Sun, “The venom slows the reponses of the face muscles, creating a wrinkle-free effect.”

Dr. Krant says: “Venom has not been proven to penetrate through healthy, intact skin to the deep layers where the target muscles lie. This product likely has no scientific benefit (in the manner claimed) at all. In order to get the muscle-weakening benefit, the only proven treatment is still injected botulinum toxins (Botox) and Dysport, and a new one coming out soon. Sorry, needle-phobes.”

Talk about a detox. MSNBC reports that actress Demi Moore uses “highly-trained medical leeches” to keep healthy. “It detoxifies your blood,” she told Letterman.  Demi explains that these blood sucking vermin, “have a little enzyme that gets released into your blood… and your health is optimized.” Um, okay… “I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimize your health and healing,” she says. Despite Demi’s loyalty to leeches, we predict this beauty trend will be sluggish to catch on…

Dr. Krant says: “Leeches have been used for centuries in medical treatments. Hirudo medicinalis, or medicinal leeches, likely the ‘highly-trained’ species Demi is referring to, are used effectively by surgeons to aid in wound cleaning, reconstructive surgery and other advanced treatments, but currently there is no proof that leech therapy has any anti-aging properties. Do not try this at home since uncontrollable, prolonged bleeding and infection can be undesired side effects.”

Dr. Jessica J. Krant is a dermatologist based in New York and the founder of Art of Dermatology, LLC. She is also Assistant Clinical Professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City.

{Poll} Are these FOF celebs acting spiritual or silly?

Bless their souls for their unwavering devotion… or should we say a prayer for these FOF celebs? Read about their religious practices, then decide, are these stars “acting” spiritual or just plain silly?

PLAYBOY: Sounds like you have all the answers. Where do we go when we die?
Kirstie Alley: We just pick another body. We go to the nearest hospital where women are giving birth, find some good-looking parents and jump in.

-Excerpt from an interview with Playboy on her beliefs rooted in Scientology, 2008.

Scientology may have saved Kirstie Alley’s soul… but has Kirstie sold her soul to them? In 1979, the FOF actress attended a Scientology-supported rehab program which she says saved her from a serious cocaine addiction. “I thought, O.K., this is either the world’s biggest scam or it’s fabulous,” she said in a Time Magazine article. “I stopped working, quit my job, and I drove my car to California to be a Scientologist.” In 2000, Kirstie Alley bought a $1.5 million mansion in Clearwater, FL, Scientology’s spiritual headquarters. In 2007, she gifted $5 million to the Church of Scientology and appeared in this preachy pamphlet in which she gives the religion rave reviews. In addition to saving her from a drug addiction, Kirstie Alley credits Scientology – along with Jenny Craig – for helping her lose weight, says CBS News. “Without Scientology, I’d be dead,” Kirstie Alley said, according to Gawker.

Is Madonna practicing Kabbalah in good faith? On her Re-Invention World Tour in 2004, Madonna rocked a “Kabbalists Do It Better” t-shirt. In 1997 she threw a Kabbalah cocktail party. “Since Madonna first started singing Kabbalah’s praises six years ago — literally, on her 1998 album Ray of Light— she has arguably become the practice’s most prominent advocate,” according to a USA Today article from 2004. She may be the most prominent advocate, but Madonna’s showy acts of spirituality have upset some Rabbis and scholars who say she’s “preaching a practice whose ties to traditional, ancient Kabbalah are tenuous at best and treacherous at worst,” according to the same USA Today article. “Watchdog types say the Kabbalah Center is more about merchandising — ’empowered’ stones, soul-cleansing water, those $26 strings — than enlightenment.” According to a BBC article, Madonna defended her practice of Kabbalah, saying, “it would be less controversial if I joined the Nazi Party,” and it’s “not hurting anybody.”

There’s a real, live witch hunt going on in Hollywood, with FOF singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks in question for her involvement in Wicca. Known for her mystical fashion  — billowing chiffon skirts, shawls and layers of lace — it’s no mystery where the rumors of witchcraft surfaced. “Some rather credulous people believe her lyrics in songs such as Rhiannon, Gold Dust Woman and even the recent Sorcerer reference a demi-monde of white magic and wiccan ritual,” writes Guy Blackman in a 2006 article for The Age. Furthermore, her music is copyrighted under the name Welsh Witch Music. When confronted about the rumors Stevie says it’s all a bunch of hocus-pocus. “I have no idea what precipitated those rumors… I am not a witch. Get a life!” she said in a Yahoo chat in 1998. “I spent thousands of dollars on beautiful black clothes and had to stop wearing them for a long time because a lot of people scared me. And that’s really unfair to me, I think, for people – other people – to conjure up their ideas of what I am or what I believe in,” Nicks said in a 1983 Entertainment Tonight interview.

Academy Award winning English actress and FOF Judi Dench was first attracted to the Quaker faith because she loved the school uniforms, according to an article on the Hampshire Quakers website. But, her devotion to the religion has become much more than a fashion statement.  Raised Methodist, she converted to Quakerism after attending The Mount School, a Quaker public secondary school in York, England. “It’s essential to my life and work,” she said of her faith to a reporter for The Guardian. But it seems, she still has a sense of humor about her faith. “When we were doing Arbuzov’s The Promise,” she recalls, “I said to Ian McKellen we should keep three seats empty and imagine we were playing to God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Ian rather wittily said, ‘Surely we’ll only need one seat rather than three?'”

A hot debate has surfaced over FOF actress Trudie Styler and rock star hubby, Sting’s sex life. The couple have long been rumored to practice tantric sex “in which they use yoga to achieve prolonged states of ecstasy,” according to a New York Post article. “Sadomasochism is the new Tantra,” Trudie once said according to a Huffington Post article. Tantra is “Hindu or Buddhist scriptures dealing especially with techniques and rituals including meditative and sexual practices,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Still, Hindu leaders are not amused by the couple’s loose interpretation of tantra as a sex practice. “Hindus welcomed Hollywood and other celebrities to immerse in Hinduism, but taking it seriously and not just flirting with its terminology and concepts and using it as a fashion statement,” Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism said according to TheIndian.com.

{Poll} Vote for the most generous FOF celeb!

Celeb scandals abound. But you rarely hear about celebs’ good deeds. Read about 4 charitable FOF stars, and then vote on which one has the biggest heart.

Oprah Winfrey

Her good deeds:
-In 2005, Oprah gave $50 million to the Oprah Winfrey Foundation in Chicago to support education and other programs for women and children in the United States and abroad.

Oprah’s Angel Network, which she launched in 1997, has raised more than $80 million and touched lives in more than 30 countries around the world. Oprah personally covered all administrative costs associated with the charity, so all funds raised could help others. Among other accomplishments, Oprah’s Angel Network worked with Free The Children to build more than 55 schools in 12 countries, providing education for thousands of children in rural areas. The network provided more than $1 million worth of school supplies for 18,000 impoverished South African children and helped more than 1,000 New Orleans families get back on their feet after Katrina.

-In 2007, Oprah invested $40 million and her own time establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. The school originally enrolled 150 pupils and has state-of-the-art classrooms, computer and science labs, a library, theater and beauty salon. Oprah teaches a class at the school via satellite. “For many years, people always asked me why didn’t I have children?… Now I know why I didn’t have children,” Oprah said in an interview with CNN.  “Because I  have all of these daughters…These girls are a reflection of me, and I’m 100 percent certain that this school will produce the leaders of tomorrow.”

-Oprah’s lifetime charitable donations estimate: $303 million

Martha Stewart

Her good deeds:
-While serving time in jail, Martha Stewart, an animal lover, created a video on behalf of fur-bearing animals after being approached by PETA. “I used to wear real fur, but, like many others, I had a change of heart when I learned what actually happens to the animals,” said Martha in the video.

-In 2006, she gave $5 million to New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital for a center on healthy aging. Martha said the donation was inspired by the death of her mother, Martha Kostyra. “About a year after she died,” said Stewart in an interview with ABC NEWS/Nightline, “I was cleaning my shelf where I keep my pocketbooks. And I remember being handed this brown pocketbook. I looked inside, and written in gold inside was a beautiful message from my mother telling me how proud she was of my accomplishments. I’d never seen it before. I’d never thanked her.”

Rosie O’Donnell

Her good deeds:
-In 1997, Rosie O’Donnell used the $3 million advance from her memoir to found her organization “For All Kids.” Since it’s inception, the foundation has awarded more than $22 million in early childhood care and education program grants to over 900 nonprofit organizations. The opening of The Children’s Plaza and Family Center in Renaissance Village, a FEMA trailer park in Louisiana, was another initiative of Rosie’s foundation.

-Listerine donated more than $350,000  for charity on behalf of Rosie’s “Unkissable” campaign. Every time a guest on Rosie’s show would kiss her, Listerine execs would donate $1,000 to charity.

-In 2003, Rosie founded “Rosie’s Broadway Kids,” (Now “Rosie’s Theater Kids”), an organization dedicated to providing free music and dance instruction to New York City public schools or students. She donated all profits made from her 2007 book, Celebrity Detox, to the cause. The organization serves more than 4,500 teachers, students and their family members at 21 schools.

-Rosie’s lifetime charitable donations estimate: $100 million

Barbra Streisand

-In 2008, she gave $5 million to fund the Barbra Streisand Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s Women’s Heart Center.

-Barbra sold 526 items at Julien’s Auctions in October 2009. Items included a costume from Funny Lady, a vintage dental cabinet she bought at 18 years old and a painting by Kees van Dongen. She donated the $573k in proceeds to her foundation.

{Poll} Which FOF celeb is the “greenest”?

FOF celebs have been singing the praises of all things eco, sustainable and energy efficient. But when they’re not in the limelight, which stars stay green?

Read about 3 “eco-friendly” FOF celebs, and then vote on who is truly “greenest.”

Bette Midler

Every day I have to remind myself that cleaning up the environment is like fighting a war. Changing people’s minds and habits is one of the hardest things anyone can do. But, if each one of us does our own part, day after day, we can make a difference.” — Bette Midler

Her greenchievements:
-In 1995, Bette founded the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), a non-profit organization that revitalizes parks in economically disadvantaged New York city neighborhoods. The organization has removed more than 2,000 tons of trash from New York City parks and saved hundreds of community gardens from commercial development.

-Bette Midler and the NYRP are leading MillionTreesNYC, an initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout New York City’s five boroughs by 2017.

-She is a recipient of the 2008 National Audubon Society’s Rachel Carson Award and the United Nations Environmental Programme Influential Women of The Environment Award.

Her eco-oops!:
-In August of 2007, Bette came under fire for cutting down 230 trees on her Hawaiian property without a permit.

—————————————————————————————————–

Roseanne Barr

“[Macadamia nuts hold] the promise of a brilliant future for this planet…I have a nut farm. I’m growing macadamia nuts… I’m serious about it.” – Roseanne Barr

Her greenchievements:
-This year, Roseanne purchased a 40-acre macadamia nut farm in Hawaii while promoting her book “Roseannarchy: Dispatches From the Nut Farm.” Roseanne said nuts are better than meat for environmental and health reasons: “They’re the perfect protein. They don’t have any carbohydrates and the only fat they’ve got is a lot, but it’s the good kind. So it’s better than beef. No greenhouse gases. Nice nuts.” We knew she was nutty…but not this nutty!

-Later this year, Roseanne will premiere a reality show about her life on the macadamia farm on the Lifetime television network.  The network has ordered 16 half-hour episodes which will feature the FOF comedian Johnny Ardent, her boyfriend, and her son, Jake.

Her eco-oops!:
-Roseanne is  in the middle of a land dispute with her Hawaiian neighbors. They have filed a complaint with County officials that she has been doing grading work on the property, without proper permits. Prior to this, Roseanne sought a temporary restraining order against the same neighbors for harassment. She has said that any land use violations were “a mistake” and going forward she’ll work to comply with regulations.

Daryl Hannah

“One wouldn’t think that you would have to become an environmentalist or a humanitarian. It’s just natural to treat people and other creatures on the planet with respect.” —Daryl Hannah

Her greenchievements:
-On June 13, 2006 Hannah was arrested when she chained herself to a walnut tree for three weeks (talk about a tree-hugger!) to protest the bulldozing of an urban farm in Los Angeles. She spent some time in jail following the arrest. She was arrested again in June of 2009 when she protested a mountaintop removal in West Virginia.

-Hannah started an online store selling only environmentally friendly goods and a website with environmental news and videos on topics ranging from veganism to biodiesel.

-She is a board member of the Environmental Media Association, Action Sports Environment Coalition and ecoAmerica and co-founded Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance to promote sustainable biodiesel practices.

-She has a green home in the Rocky Mountains made with salvaged materials. It uses solar energy for heating and cooling and features a moss stone couch (that she waters regularly).

Her eco-oops!:
-None we could find!
