{Beauty} The best eye makeup of your life

“If you’re over fifty and you’re not wearing eye makeup, you should be.”
–Beauty Expert Lois Joy Johnson, The FOF Beauty Bash

FOF makeup artist Sandy Linter has been helping models and celebs look gorgeous for three decades. In her book, The Makeup Wakeup–co-authored with beauty editor Lois Joy Johnson–she brilliantly demystifies her techniques. At this year’s FOF Beauty Bash, she took it one step further, and created the perfect eye-makeup look, live, on a real FOF woman.

Watch this video from the event and then tell us what you think.  Could you create this look at home?

The Best Eye Makeup Of Your Life from faboverfifty on Vimeo.

1.  Use a 10x magnifying mirror.

2.  Do your eye makeup first–before you do anything else, including your foundation.

3.  Use a primer or oil-free concealer on your lids–it will help you eye makeup stay in place.

4.  Hold your eyelid skin taught and apply black pencil along the upper lash line, in short strokes, from the outside in. Line the bottom lashline as well, and stop at the center of the lower lid, right below your pupil.

5.  Don’t line the inner corners of your eyes.

6.  After applying your pencil, apply liquid liner to your upper lid, right against the lash line.

7.  Define the crease by brushing black or charcoal shadow along your brow bone.

8.  Add concealer to the inner corners of your eyes.

9.  Curl your lashes and apply black mascara.

10.  Keep the lid light–using a color on your lid can actually detract from your eye color.

{Makeovers} Meet Karen and Cathy, winners of the Beauty Bash makeover

Next weekend (Oct 1 & 2) at The Beauty Bash, FOFs will be stunned to see the total transformations of Cathy Furegno and Karen Hansen, last month’s makeover winners. Both will receive $3,500 transformations including new clothes, new makeup, new hair and a color consultation. Meet them, below.

Meet Cathy:

Why did you enter this contest?

I thought ‘why not?’  I am a bit on the shy side and never had much self-confidence. I felt if I won, this would be my 15 minutes of fame. I always dreamed of being a model.

How has your appearance changed since you turned fifty?
My weight is about the same, although I do have a tendency to fluctuate by about five-to-ten pounds (but don’t we all?) My face is a bit longer and I have ‘parenthesis’ but no wrinkles. My eyes also look tired at times. I have some gray hair but I dye it. I’ve always had baby fine hair.

Describe your self-image.
I am not ashamed of how I look, but I don’t spend much money on myself. I have 4 children and a husband and always felt guilty if I put myself first.

Describe your style.
It’s on the conservative side, although I admire flamboyant people because they are not afraid to wear what they want. I don’t spend much money on clothes.

Do you have a fashion icon?

Jacklyn Smith. Her taste is simple, yet she always looks wonderful. She was and is one of the most elegant women in the world.

What are you looking forward to most about your makeover?
Learning how to bring out the best in myself. I know I will enjoy all the attention. A dream come true!

Meet Karen:

Why did you enter this giveaway?
I’ve always wanted a makeover. I grew up in the straight hair, no makeup, jeans and t-shirt generation and have never been great at putting myself together. My kids always said I was ‘hair and makeup challenged.’

What do you wish you could change about your appearance?
I wish my thinning hair was nice and thick. I’d like to get rid of the wrinkles starting under my chin and neck. My biggest wish is weight loss.

How would you describe your personal style?

Confused. I love the preppy look, like the “hippie” look but also like my jeans-and-T-shirt days. It all depends on my mood and activities.

How do you want to look on your 60th birthday?
Younger — like 50 on my 60th. I feel 24, my body acts 80 and my birth certificate says 58.

What do you hope to get out of this makeover?
How to look my best. I want to learn how to accentuate my best features and how to play down my flaws.

{Giveaway} 12 Benefits Hair Products

Thank you for entering. This contest is now closed.

What’s the formula for gorgeous, lustrous hair? 95% protein, 3% moisture and trace elements, and 2% natural lipids, according to researchers at Paulmaier, who have been studying hair for over sixty years. It doesn’t take much to throw off this delicate balance–chlorine, salt water, UV exposure, flat ironing, and blow-drying all strip hair of it’s natural lipids, leaving it brittle and unmanageable. But Paulmaier promises that its 12 Benefits duo restores natural lipids to FOF hair “dramatically reversing the “AGED & DAMAGED” look and feel.” You be the judge! 5 FOFs will win a set and put this product to the test.

{Giveaway} Victoria McGill Eye Defining Contour Strips

20 FOFs will get to test Eye Defining Contour Strips by Victoria McGill. To enter, answer in the comments below: What would you most want to change about your eyes?

Thank you for entering. This contest is now closed.

About fifteen years ago, FOF Judy McGill had a bug bite that turned into a scab above her eye. The scab had a lifting effect, pulling taut the loose skin on her eyelids. She wondered if there was a way she could recreate the look, this time on both of her eyes, after her scab healed. Judy, who worked at a grocery store at the time, perused the aisles and experimented with different materials until she found what she was looking for — surgical grade medical adhesive. She cut it to size and began wearing it in the contour of her eye lid.

“The effect was instant,” says her daughter, Victoria. “It tucked the loose skin into its natural crease and gave her such a youthful look.”

Judy spent the next few years making modifications to the strips such as adding “makeup-gripping” material to the top to hold liner and eyeshadow. She finally patented the product in 2001. Victoria began marketing and selling it when her mother fell ill with leukemia. “I knew how happy my mother had been when she wore the strips,” says Victoria. “I said to her, ‘what if we bring this to everyone?’ And we did.”

Today, celeb makeup artists including Patrick Eichler and Jennifer Snowdon swear by the crescent-shaped adhesive when they want to create a lifted, more defined eyelid–instantly.  Be one of 20 FOFs who put them to the test…
